Anonymous Wine Collective Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
2023 Anonymous Wine Collective Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

This wine delivers a benchmark Anderson Valley flavor profile at a price point that is simply unbeatable. Over-delivering on value has always been at the core of the Anonymous Wine Collective, and I'm certain this wine does that and then some. I'm thrilled with the end result of this bottling that I was able to compose from barrel samples dialing in the exact character I wanted to capture from this top quality vintage and great but (top secret) vineyard source. The wine is loaded is pure forest berry fruit, dusty, earthy spices, brambles, Redwood grove, and alpine herbs. Elegant and silky, but full of flavor and layered nuance. For $20 I challenge you to find a more complete bottle of Pinot Noir that delivers the goods so emphatically! Enjoy!

Domaine Benoît Cantin Irancy "La Grande Côte"
2023 Domaine Benoît Cantin Irancy "La Grande Côte"

This is a red wine that transports you to your favorite bistro in Dijon or Paris. One with paper on the tables, wooden chairs, and mirrors on the walls, sipping a glass while awaiting your steak au poivre and a tangle of frites. It's immediately charming and totally irresistible. If you've ever wondered where Burgundy keeps its secrets, drive fifteen minutes south of Chablis and you'll find Irancy, a south-facing amphitheater of Kimmeridgian limestone with fewer than 200 hectares of vines and fewer than fifty growers, every one of them making red wine on soils the rest of the world associates with oysters and Chablis. The climate has done Irancy a favor the Côte d'Or might envy: the amphitheater now ripens Pinot comfortably most years, slopes once written off as too cool are being planted, and the village sailed through the 2016 and 2021 frosts that gutted the rest of Burgundy, so the wines have gone from lean and angular to genuinely delicious without losing their chalky northern minerality. The Cantins have been farming here for generations, and Benoît, who bottled his first solo vintage in 1994 with his father Bernard still at his side, works 16 hectares spread across ten of the village's lieux-dits. "La Grande Côte" is sourced from a steep slope that tumbles toward the Yonne River and faces south-southwest so the Pinot soaks up every hour of northern sun, making this cuvée is the fullest and most structured Irancy in Benoit's range. In 2023, vibrant and pure-fruited aromatics leap out of the glass, immediately calling you for a second sniff. Wild fresh berries and fresh violets on the palate all coil around a chalky, beautifully fresh core. Who knew Red Burgundy under $30 could be this compelling?

Welcome to Cherrytown — dark cherry, cherry pit, cherry wood spice, and candied cherry dusted with cinnamon, infused with clove, and laced with candied rose petals. I drank this with Damien Hugot and his wife at the Royal Champagne, the newly refurbished hotel and Michelin one-star restaurant just between Epernay and Reims this spring, and have been thinking about it ever since. This is a clean, refreshing style of rosé that gets hints of richness not from the small percentage of ancient vine Meunier that is added, but rather from the Cramant and Chouilly base of Chardonnay that makes up more than 90% of the blend. This is “rosé all day” rosé, with bright red fruit and racy minerality, along with top-notch chalk on the long finish.

Bid on this bottle of 1984 Henri Jayer Echezeaux Grand Cru. According to Jasper Morris, MW: "Henri Jayer's personal philosophy begun with the observation that 'wine must not be brought up in cotton-wool' and 'let nature go'. He was adamant that one cannot replace artificially elements in a wine which are absent at the start. Tinkering with musts and wine to adjust the results for inadequate fruit is not the way to achieve quality. Jayer channeled his energy and expertise in producing top-class grapes to vinify from vines that are more than 50 years old. Jayer's vinification methods were not particularly unusual but they reminded us that 'wine is for pleasure so one seeks as perfect an equilibrium as possible.'"

Magnien also issues a negociant label, Maison Frederic Magnien, exclusively from purchased grapes. If that sounds confusing, welcome to Burgundy! If pure, honeyed thickness and glycerin are what you are looking for, there is not a more concentrated Chardonnay produced in the world. The only thing I have ever seen from the new world that approaches a wine such as this in nectar-like richness were the 1978 and 1980 Chalone, but that winery has now resorted to making much lighter, more commercially-oriented products. There is nothing commercial about this 1989 Montrachet. ...here is a bottle that will offer an awesome nose of honeyed, buttery, apple fruit, intertwined with aromas of smoked nuts and toasty new oak. The bouquet is deep and profound, offering up a glorious mélange of red cherries, plums, cardamom, cloves, woodsmoke, mustard seed, earth and just a whisper of spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and tangy, with lovely focus, no rough edges (it certainly does take a few years with top Nuits St. Georges to get to this point), and a very long, balanced, meltingly-tannic and brilliant finish. The 1980 Vaucrains seems just a bit more complete and velvety than the 1980 Cailles, at least at this stage. It would be fascinating to revisit both these wines again ten years down the road. In any event, the 1980 Vaucrains is just a superb bottle of wine, and given how well it is showing at age twenty-five, it is hard not to think that all top vintages of Chevillon’s “big three” need at least this much time to fully reach their apogees." Mayacamas & Caymus Pinot Noir Tasting Lot
Mayacamas & Caymus Pinot Noir Tasting Lot

Bid on this 2-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 1980 Mayacamas California Pinot Noir and 1-bottle of 1984 Caymus "Special Selection" Napa Valley Pinot Noir. Of the 1980 Mayacamas California Pinot Noir, Napa's venerable Mayacamas is legendary for making some of California's most beautiful and ageless Cabernet Sauvignons but the winery also produced a Pinot Noir for much of its history. This wine was bottled a little more than a decade after Bob Travers purchased the estate and his approach to Pinot was similar to Cabernet; favoring structure and freshness with respect for the fruit and with the goal of lasting for decades.

Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers" & "La Combe Aux Moines" Tasting Lot

Bid on this 3-bottle tasting lot; including 2-bottles of 1988 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers" (95RP) and 1-bottle of 1991 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "La Combe Aux Moines" (92RP). Of the 1988 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers", Wine Advocate writes: "The Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers was on par with the great wines from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. The fabulously exotic, rich, multidimensional bouquet was followed by gorgeous layers of extract, layer upon layer of smoky, herb-tinged fruit flavors, soft tannins, a full body, and a finish that must last several minutes. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2021 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (96JD, 94JS, 93DC, 93RP). Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2021 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is floral with perfume and ripe red berries, as well as notes of framboise, rosemary, and incense. Offering fantastic balance, with fine tannins, fresh seamless acidity, and a good purity of fruit, this is a very attractive wine now and will continue to provide prime drinking over the next 12 or more years. Marcassin "Three Sisters Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
2010 Marcassin "Three Sisters Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Marcassin "Three Sisters Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (96WS). Wine Spectator: "Presents a rich, unctuous core of fresh earth and herbs, as well as a strong dose of oak, although the wine wears the wood well. Strikingly young and vibrant, this could easily pass for a much younger wine. *Collectible* (JL)" (01/2016)

Domaine A&F Gros Clos Vougeot Grand Cru "Le Grand Maupertuis"
1990 Domaine A&F Gros Clos Vougeot Grand Cru "Le Grand Maupertuis"

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1990 Domaine A&F Gros Clos Vougeot Grand Cru "Le Grand Maupertuis" (93BH). Burghound: "A simply spectacular and fully mature nose of earth, spice, leather, truffle and a lovely iron/stone note is followed by big, robust, intense and velvety full-bodied flavors that offer stunning depth and richness before culminating in a still firm finish that delivers outstanding length. This is impressive as hell and while not an elegant or especially sophisticated wine, it is approachable now and one that will live for many years to come, indeed it has not yet quite reached its full potential, at least not for my taste. As such, I would be inclined to let it continue to age for another 3 to 5 years or so though if you do decide to open a bottle now, be sure to give it 30 minutes in a decanter first. Tasted three times with consistent notes." (02/2010)
