The classic 2018 Arbois Vin Jaune wafts up with pronounced walnuts, grilled almonds, pastry and hay. Bruised apple adds more aromatic complexity. Full-bodied, powerful and concentrated, the 2018 is a full-throttle Vin Jaune that, despite all its solar heft, neatly maintains its overall balance through steely Savagnin acidity. Nutty complexities emerge on the long, savoury finish. (NG)
Dry, crisp, fresh and incredibly fragrant, this sparkling wine is a terrific bargain. The good news is there are around 4,000 cases of it, although I do not know how much is imported by Kermit Lynch...This cuvee may qualify as the 'wine bargain of the year.' A Champagne-like sparkling rose from the largely forgotten area of Bugey (which only received appellation status in 2009), this low alcohol (8%) offering is made from 90% Gamay and 10% Poulsard (an indigenous grape of the region). In 1973, Daniel Dugois bought 2 hectares of vineyard and a house equipped with wine cellars in a village called Les Arsures, where he was born. He cultivated the vineyard and sold his production primarily to Henri Maire, one of the most prominent producers in Jura at that time. In 1982, Daniel made his first harvest in his own cellars and began to sell his wines to consumers. His first ever harvest earned him his first Gold Medal for his Chardonnay at the Jura Wine Contest. Daniel and his wife Monique have continued to work on the quality of their wines and their efforts have since been recognized in many wine contests and guidebook reviews. In 2003, their son Philippe returned to the estate to lend a hand in the winemaking and in 2013 he took charge of the vineyard. All grapes are hand harvested and native yeasts are used during fermentation. The Sous Voile is made from 100% Savagnin and aged for several years in oak barrels in an oxidative environment allowing some flor to develop. Like a baby Vin Jaune, it has a complex and robust nose of roasted apple, curry spices and toasted almonds. The rich mouth is held by fine acidity accompanied by the flavors of walnut, tamarind, and spice all while a beautiful minerality underlines the palate.
Domaine des Carlines was founded in 2015 by husband and wife team, Patrick and Sophie Ligeron. Patrick was born in Jura and Sophie had a longstanding career in the wine industry. They now live their dreams through 11 hectares of vines in Ménétru-Le-Vignoble, part of Château-Châlon appellation. Handpicked lots were vinified separately for Voile de Chardonnay and the wine fermented and aged in French oak barrels for 12 months.
2019 was a cold year, and the 2019 L'Etoile Vin Jaune is stunning. It's smoky, peaty, yeasty, expressive, complex and detailed, with hints of orange peel, iodine, green walnut, spices, curry and fennel. It's elegant and balanced, rich and textured. It's not a shy wine at 15.4% alcohol, but it has a vibrant twist that keeps the balance and poise with the L'Etoile finesse and freshness. It was sourced from vines in Les Budes planted in 1988 on gray marl soils. This has to be one of the finest Vin Jaunes at Montbourgeau in recent years. They are so balanced and elegant that they are drinkable from early on, but it will gain complexity with years in the bottle. (LG) 98+

From the importer: "It is made by an infusion of gentian, cinchona (quinine), and renowned herbs of the Grand Chartreuse mountains in a mistelle base. Traditionally enjoyed neat or with a twist; also may enhance classic drinks in place of sweet red vermouth."

Wayne to one of the Doobie Brothers on an old "What's Happpenin'?" episode: "Which Doobie do you be?" Me to the Domaine Balivet Bugey Cerdon: "Which Bugey do you be?" Answer? The good kind! Fresh, semi-tart heirloom apples with some fizz. What's not to like?

This is my kind of wine! Lush and creamy with the kind of long finish that both invites you to savor the moment and go back for another sip. There is a bright undercurrent of orange and meyer lemon that helps cut through the roundness and adds a lovely citrusy lift to the finish. Made with chardonnay and aged in 3-5 year old barrels, this can hold its own with white burgundy twice the price. Last little note for those who may have been burned by Jura before, this is not a vin de juane, which is to say it's not aged under a layer of flor and it won't taste oxidated the way sherry does :)
