Reviewed September 2026
2019 was a cold year, and the 2019 L'Etoile Vin Jaune is stunning. It's smoky, peaty, yeasty, expressive, complex and detailed, with hints of orange peel, iodine, green walnut, spices, curry and fennel. It's elegant and balanced, rich and textured. It's not a shy wine at 15.4% alcohol, but it has a vibrant twist that keeps the balance and poise with the L'Etoile finesse and freshness. It was sourced from vines in Les Budes planted in 1988 on gray marl soils. This has to be one of the finest Vin Jaunes at Montbourgeau in recent years. They are so balanced and elegant that they are drinkable from early on, but it will gain complexity with years in the bottle. (LG) 98+

Notes

One of the classic icon producers of the L'Etoile region, Montbourgeau began its history in the 1920s and has produced traditional Jura wines ever since. L'Etoile takes its name from the tiny fossilized stars scattered throughout the limestone and marl soils. One of the classic wines of the entire region, the Vin Jaune is made from 100% Savagninn and aged for seven years under the voile (veil of yeast) developing the signature profile of Jura. It is a singular wine with great potential for additional aging. Serve lightly chilled with the classic Comte cheese of the region.
