Randi "Rambela" Rambela Bianca Romagna
2025 Randi "Rambela" Rambela Bianca Romagna

Famoso is the Ravenna plain's own aromatic grape, a historic variety that had all but vanished before a group of growers around Bagnacavallo recovered it, had it entered in the national register in 2009 and gave it back its dialect name, Rambëla. Randi has made wine in Fusignano since the early 1950s, and under Massimo Randi it has become the variety's standard-bearer: four organically farmed hectares planted in 2007 on the sandy clay of the Bassa Romagna, cordon-trained at a modest three thousand vines per hectare, with the Bianca vinified in steel alone so that the perfume arrives unedited. In the glass, it pours a pale straw with green glints. The nose is elderflower, sage, white peach and orange blossom, with a cool, chalky note beneath the fruit: a Traminer-like perfume without Traminer's weight. On the palate it is dry and light-bodied, with fresh acidity, a soft saline undertow and a faint bitter-almond grip that gives the finish its shape.

Randi Burson "Randi Selezione" Ravenna
2020 Randi Burson "Randi Selezione" Ravenna

This is one of the most fascinating rescue stories in Italian viticulture. In the 1920s, a man named Antonio Longanesi discovered a single, unknown vine climbing the branches of an old oak tree in the swamplands of Emilia-Romagna. He propagated it, saving the grape from total extinction. Today, that grape is known as Uva Longanesi, and the wine made from it is trademarked as Bursôn—the historical nickname of the Longanesi family. Tenuta Randi is one of the key pillars of the Consorzio Il Bagnacavallo, a small, fiercely dedicated group of Romagnolo producers protecting this ultra-rare variety. Grown in the alluvial plains of Ravenna, where the Adriatic Sea influences the climate, the Longanesi grape is notoriously thick-skinned and rustic, demanding immense patience both in the vineyard and the cellar. To tame its massive structure, the "Selezione" tier often borrows techniques from Amarone, utilizing a partial drying of the grapes (appassimento) and extended aging in oak. It is dark, brooding, and powerfully structured.

Bellei Lambrusco di Sorbara Pietra Rossa
Bellei Lambrusco di Sorbara Pietra Rossa

Lambrusco is one of the most popular wines in Italy this time of year, but it’s a much-misunderstood category in the States. This is mostly due to the ocean of cheap, sweet versions that were popular here in the 1970s and 1980s, plus a perplexing diversity of grape varieties, styles, and colors. Lambrusco has half a dozen different appellations, half a dozen different grape varieties, and ranges from the extremely high yields in the flatlands to lesser yields in the rolling hills of Castelvetro. It takes a bit of work to figure it out, but wow—once you try a couple, you will be hooked. The Lambrusco Sorbara wines have more depth, generally darker colors, and are boldly flavored. I find the Sorbara Lambruschi are sensational with Thai or Indian cuisine, as their bold flavors hold up well to the spicy elements. (Greg St. Clair, K&L Italian wine buyer)
