A syrupy textured mixer comprised of liquid sucrose, lime juice, almond and clove essences and water—not to be consumed neat. Clove and lime juice on the nose. Thick and sweet on the palate, but the lime juice acts as the perfect balance for the high-octane liquid sucrose. Scores of applications in cocktails. *Best Buy* (PP)
Distilled in Barbados, this ten-year-old rum spent eight years in bourbon casks followed by two years in vintage wheated bourbon casks. The blend was bottled by Starlight Distillery in Borden, Indiana, without chill filtration or additives.
Roaming Road’s 18-year-old Barbados rum gets right to the heart of Mike Gilmore’s independent bottling project: find distinctive individual casks from serious producers and bottle them with enough transparency to let the selection stand on its own. Distilled at a renowned Barbados distillery from a blend of pot and column still rum, this 2025 release spent eighteen years maturing in a once-used ex-bourbon cask before being bottled at a formidable 59.8% ABV, or 119.6 proof. There are no additives, no cosmetic shortcuts and no attempt to sand down the character of the barrel. Barbados rum already carries a strong reputation with whiskey drinkers thanks to its balance of structure, ageworthiness and cask influence, and this bottling leans straight into that appeal. For anyone who has followed the rise of independent rum bottlers, Roaming Road is exactly the kind of project that keeps the category exciting: small releases, serious sourcing and casks chosen because they have something specific to say.
A classic Dickensian dissembler, Reverend Stiggins is a Pickwick Papers character who sermonized about temperance while indulging in constant sips of pineapple rum. His name graces this new rum, a project that Maison Ferrand took on, sparked by a suggestion from spirits writer David Wondrich (the two have collaborated in recent years on a Curaçao). Using a base of Plantation Original Dark Rum that’s been macerated with Queen Victoria pineapple flesh and a portion of white rum that’s been distilled with the rinds, they’ve created a barrel-aged rum that’s addictive. The pineapple notes coexist subtly with the classic brown sugar and butterscotch flavors of dark rum, with nothing cloying or overt. It’s just sheer pleasure. (JM)
The Old Fashioned Traditional Dark rum from Planteray (formerly Plantation) is a recreation of the most traditional style of English rums, bottled at a full 20 points over proof. The big, rich pot still style that was popular in the age of the sail is all but lost to the modern age of light and flavored rums. Thankfully a group of cocktail historians and industry professionals have worked to bring it back to life. The salty band of misfits brought together by Maison Ferrand's Alexander Gabriel are famous in tiki circles and beyond: Jeff Berry, Martin Cate, Paul McFadyen, Paul McGee, Scott Schuder, and David Wondrich. They blended heavy, dark rums from Barbados, Guyana, and Jamaica and bottled it at a blistering 138 proof, which is perfect for punch grog and tiki alike.
The Seale family’s Foursquare distillery in Barbados produces rum using both pot and column stills. This 11-year-old “Spinnaker” release focuses on a single barrel from the producer, bottled at cask strength and presented in a 375ml half-bottle format.
Banter White Rum is a contemporary American expression built on serious sourcing and technical intent. Led by Maggie Campbell, whose two decades in rum have helped shape the modern category, Banter reflects a belief that transparency and raw material quality matter. Rather than rely on marketing tropes, the focus here is on where the rum comes from and how it is made. The blend draws from both molasses and fresh cane juice distillates, combining traditions that rarely meet in a single white rum. Pot still components contribute weight, texture and aromatic depth, while column distilled rum adds precision and lift. By marrying these streams, Banter achieves a profile that is structured yet vibrant. There are no added sugars or flavorings, allowing the character of the cane to remain fully intact and clearly defined. On the nose, bright citrus peel and soft vanilla rise alongside a faint grassy freshness that hints at the cane juice component. The palate is dry and energetic, offering lime zest, restrained tropical fruit and a gentle mineral tone that keeps everything focused. Texture carries through the mid palate without heaviness, finishing clean with lingering citrus and crisp cane clarity. This is a white rum designed for bartenders and thoughtful drinkers alike. It brings backbone to a daiquiri, lift to a highball and enough complexity to enjoy neat, all while staying true to its carefully chosen sources and disciplined production.
Planteray, the rum brand formerly known as Plantation, creates Cut & Dry in Barbados using locally sourced coconuts. The ripe coconut flesh is hand-cut, sun-dried and infused into Barbadian rum, with the producer reporting the equivalent of four coconuts used for each liter.
Distilled, aged and blended at the Foursquare Rum Distillery in Saint Philip Parish, Barbados. The distillery was resurrected in 1996 by Richard Seale and his father Sir David Seale, but the history of the R.L. Seale Company goes generations. Founded in 1926 by Reginald Leon Seale, they've been committed to producing, blending and bottling the finest Bajan rum for nearly a century. Now Reginald's great grandson, Richard Seale is at the helm as Master Distiller and Blender of the iconic distillery. The Foursquare Distillery has won countless awards and been named "Rum Distiller of the Year" for five consecutive years. Now the family's namesake 12 year old flagship product is finally available in the US. It was distilled from pot and column stills at the Foursquare Distillery and aged for a minimum of twelve years in the tropical climate before bottling at 92 proof without sugar or flavor additives whatsoever.
Planteray is the name adopted by Maison Ferrand for the rum brand formerly known as Plantation. This Belize release is vintage-dated 2008 and carries a 15-year age statement, placing its origin, production year, and stated maturation at the center of the bottling.
Give into tempttion! It's evilly delicious.
