Launois "Helia" Grand Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne
2017 Launois "Helia" Grand Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne

Price aside, this is one of the best bottles of Champagne at K&L. This wine comes from the same ancient massal selected vines that made their special club in the past, and is also made the same way- in enamel lined iron tanks in their cellar in Mesnil. 2017 is a fantastic vintage for Chardonnay, and this is a top notch example of the success that variety had in Champagne. Not only is the wine full of rich brioche and generous citrus, its fabulous texture and complexity is balanced by bright refreshment and definitive chalky minerality. Not only will it drink great tonight, it will improve for at least a couple of decades in good storage. Don't miss this one!

As ever, rock solid Margaret River cabernet, ticking the boxes for all the right regional and varietal qualities as it goes along. Just on the full side of medium-bodied, the flavours of cassis and cedar build on the palate, escorted along by the fine but firmish tannin that rolls on through the finish to linger in the aftertaste. Enjoyable now or for years to come. (SC)

Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Monte Bello is a towering triumph of California Cabernet Sauvignon. The final blend includes 15% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. The colossal nose reads like a dictionary definition of young Monte Bello, with inky black fruits, fragrant dried herbs, treated leather and a refreshing, breezy lift that continuously bounds from the glass. The palate continues the immense heft and gravitas of the nose, with ample mid-palate richness buttressed by forceful, penetrating and vigorous tannins. The oak integration throughout is remarkable, its edges gently buffed rather than vigorously polished. Overall, this is an incredibly impressive, complex and multifaceted wine that should have no problem aging for five decades. (ML)" (04/2024)

John Gilman: " I really enjoyed the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin from Domaine Méo-Camuzet this year, as this is an archetypical synthesis of the village and the vintage. The wine is deep and nicely sappy on the nose, delivering a lovely blend of red and black cherries, chocolate, a touch of meatiness, woodsmoke, a fine base of soil tones and just a hint of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and very nicely structured, with a very good core of fruit, lovely focus and grip and impressive backend energy on the long and complex finish. This is the first vintage in which M. Étain is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine rather than a pure Cabernet. The 2017 is rich and fabulously lush, with superb balance and loads of appeal. It's hard to describe a $200 wine as under-the-radar or overdelivering, but M. Étain has really been impressive these last few vintages, and 2017 is no exception. Clotilde Legrand "Les Chaintrée" Saumur-Champigny
2017 Clotilde Legrand "Les Chaintrée" Saumur-Champigny
94JG

I last had the pleasure to taste Clotilde Legrand’s 2017 Saumur-Champigny "la Chaintrée" two years ago and the wine continues to blossom beautifully. Though the wine is now eight years of age, it was a "new release" from Madame Legrand’s cellars back in the summer of 2023, as she aged the wine fully three years in cask prior to bottling. This cuvée does not see any new oak, as it is raised in five hundred liter barrels that are three to eight years of age. Today, it offers up a superb bouquet that shows its gently oaky influence in its aromatic blend of cassis, sweet dark berries, cigar ash, tuffeau soil tones, coffee bean, a nice touch of oak and a topnote of juniper berries. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, precise and still on the young side, wit a great core of pure fruit, an excellent foundation of soil, fine-grained tannins and a long, impeccably balanced and complex finish. This is outstanding Saumur in the making, but it still needs several years in the cellar to soften up its undercarriage of tannin.

Penultimate (Promontory) Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (OWC)
2017 Penultimate (Promontory) Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (OWC)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2017 Penultimate (Promontory) Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (OWC - 92VN) in original wood. Vinous: "The 2017 Penultimate is an absolute delight. Naturally, it shows the mid-weight structure of the year, but that adds to its immediacy. Crushed flowers, sweet red-toned fruit, cedar, mint, pomegranate, plum and orange peel add an exotic flair. The 2017 is very easy to drink and like. (AG)" (12/2023)

Blackberries, blueberries and lavender with some sandalwood. Some roses, too. Full-bodied and very tight with linear, racy tannins. I like the intensity and focus. Very cool for a 2017. Drink or hold.

Domaine Jean-Marc & Hughes Pavelot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru "Aux Gravains"
2017 Domaine Jean-Marc & Hughes Pavelot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru "Aux Gravains"
94JG
91-93VN
91BH

The 2017 aux Gravains from Domaine Pavelot is another absolutely stellar young wine in the making. The aromatic constellation here is pure and elegant, wafting from the glass in a superb mix of red and black cherries, a touch of red currant, Savigny spices, raw cocoa, orange peel, gamebird, stony soil elements, cedar and a nice topnote of mustard seed. On the palate the wine is deep, full and very transparent in profile, with sappy core of very pure fruit, great length and grip and a youthfully complex, vibrant and beautifully precise finish. This will need a bit of bottle age to really start to hit on all cylinders, but it is going to be stellar when it is ready to drink. (Drink between 2024-2065)
