James Suckling
Reviewed July 2021Blackberries, blueberries and lavender with some sandalwood. Some roses, too. Full-bodied and very tight with linear, racy tannins. I like the intensity and focus. Very cool for a 2017. Drink or hold.
Notes
Cignale grew out of a 1980 collaboration between Neil and Maria Empson and Castello di Querceto's François family. A Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend with Merlot, it comes from the Greve in Chianti hills; the importer describes south- to southeast-facing vineyards at 490–520 meters. JamesSuckling.com's 2017 review finds a full-bodied wine held in a linear, tightly drawn tannic frame. Dark berries and floral notes accompany that structure, and the review specifically notes a cool impression in this vintage.
