Wine Advocate: "The compelling 2007 Pinot Noir Cuvee Catherine from the Occidental Station Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast is made entirely from the Calera clone. Deep ruby/purple with crushed raspberries, violets, Chinese black tea, and chalky, almost wet stone-like notes, the wine is rich, full-bodied, multi-dimensional, with superb depth and length, and a remarkable finish. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2007 Harlan "The Maiden" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (93RP, 93WS, 92ST, 91JS). Wine Advocate: "As outstanding as the 2008 is, it is eclipsed by the brilliant 2007 The Maiden, perhaps the finest second wine yet made here. Sweet tobacco leaf, fruitcake, creme de cassis, black currant and licorice aromas emerge from this round, opulent, voluptuously textured wine. It is very much in keeping with the 2007 vintage. Strikingly pure, complex aromas of redcurrant, cherry, spicecake, tobacco and licorice. Pliant, focused red fruit flavors are complemented by deeper notes of mocha and cola. Finishes with silky tannins and a slow-building mineral quality. With its clarity, juiciness and lingering spiciness, this is far more inviting than the brooding Pavots today. (ST)" (06/2010)

The finest red wine I have tasted from this vineyard, it is a beautifully proportioned, full-bodied Cabernet with a hint of a cool climate character as well as impressive precision and purity. It will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and last for 25+ years. (RP)" (12/2009)

Bid on this 4-half-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Clos Jebsal Pinot Gris Sélection de Grains Nobles (375ml), a rare, luscious dessert wine from Olivier Humbrecht MW, Alsace’s first Master of Wine and one of the world’s great biodynamic winemakers. Clos Jebsal is the domaine’s walled monopole near Turckheim, whose cool, gypsum-rich marl soils produce some of Alsace’s most profound sweet wines. Sélection de Grains Nobles is the region’s highest designation for late-harvest wine, made only in exceptional years from hand-selected, botrytis-affected berries. Expect honey, dried apricot, candied peach, quince and orange marmalade layered with smoke, saffron, ginger and a mineral edge, with an unctuous, concentrated palate balanced by bright acidity and an exceptionally long finish. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Sea Smoke "Ten" Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir (97WE, 91VN). Wine Enthusiast: "This very dense, tannic Pinot Noir represents a triumph for both the winery, the vintage and the region it represents. A multi-clone blend (hence the name) with high, cool-climate acidity and aged in 100% new oak, it’s still young, fresh and tight. The astringency throws a cloak over the raspberries, cherries, rosehip tea and Indian spice flavors, which reveal themselves only reluctantly. But they’re there, in an imposing texture of velvet and silk. This enormous wine demands time. *Wine Enthusiast Best of 2010, Cellar Selection* " (03/2010)

Bid on this bottle of 2007 Scarecrow Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (100JD, 100JS, 100RP, 96VN). Wine Advocate: "Scarecrow's inky/purple-colored 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a prodigious effort. It reveals a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with a smorgasbord of spring flower, blueberry, creme de cassis, and assorted blue, black, and red fruit characteristics. It also possesses extraordinary concentration, but what sets it apart is the fragrant aromatics combined with uncommon purity and elegance for such a full-bodied, massively concentrated wine. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Kongsgaard Napa Valley Grenache-Syrah. According to Robert Parker: "The idiosyncratic, but brilliant producer of Chardonnay, Roussanne/Viognier, Syrah, and more recently, Cabernet Sauvignon, John Kongsgaard, and his low-tech, artisinal winemaking style have had an enormous influence on many top northern California winemakers. It’s always a treat to taste with him. All his wines are limited in quantity as the family’s vineyard in Coombsville is only 9 acres, so he draws fruit from special plots in the Hudson Vineyard for his Syrah...Kongsgaard employs no additives, proteins, or enzymes, ferments his Syrah in pungeons with indigenous yeasts, and does not sulphur the wine until long after malolactic is completed. In the huge Hudson Vineyard, he has an unusual block of vines planted totally in volcanic soils and shale. This is the source for his Syrah, one of the most provocative and individualistic Syrahs made in California." (12/2008)

Insider's Advantage
This gorgeous barrel of Auchroisk is so classical and creamy it's a real drinker. I'm not sure what qualifies this to have been bottled for the inauguration of Ardnahoe, but if they were going for the most typical in style from this particular distillery, I'd believe it. Let's have a go. The color is white wine (0.1). The nose is big orchard fruit -tangy green apple, Bartlett pear, fresh malt, kiwi skins, graham cracker and creme anglais. On the palate it's equally juicy with big apple-y fruit and more pithy citrus. The creaminess of the nose is lost to some earthy malt character, but a dash of water bring is roaring back. It surely doesn't need the water and will drink nicely if you like the edge of full 100 proof. Perhaps not unusual or bold, but just damn good malty mid-aged Speysider for a wonderful price.
Not a lot can go wrong with a nicely aged Craigellachie in a good quality sherry butt. There was a period when many of these barrels showed strong sulfur character, so much so that certain Scotch lovers actively seek out that style, but modern bottlings rarely exhibit those intense flavors. This, however, is not one of the rarer lighter-style Craigellachies that could feel as if they were distilled anywhere. Instead, it is a very classical expression, showing the telltale aromatics of that heady old-school spirit. The label does not indicate that this is a refill barrel, yet the color is not particularly dark, suggesting a somewhat subtler wine influence compared to others we have seen over the years. That bodes well for a balanced, complex, and classical profile, which I typically love. Let me check. The color is amber (0.7). The nose is immediately expressive, with dense aromas of machine shop, cured meats, candied pineapple, and malty syrup. There is a tiny twinge of sulfur funk, but it is well within expected bounds and likely comes from the spirit rather than the cask. The palate is absolutely gorgeous, shedding that hint of funk and instead showing a powerful, oily texture. The sweetness on the front palate is undeniable, with nutty caramel sauce, citrus oils, and sweet fruit, pulled back by dark fudgy cocoa and a subtle salty, earthy finish. This is exceptionally pleasurable and well balanced. I should have tasted it with water, but it is perfectly lovely neat. It also loves oxygen, and the patient drinker will be rewarded as this malt continues to build in the glass. Fabulous value here.
Bid on this 4-bottle tasting lot; including 1 2007 Domaine de Cristia Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes (98JD, 98RP, 96WS), 1 2007 Domaine de la Charbonnière "Les Hauts Brusquières Cuvée Spéciale" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96RP, 93ST, 93VN), 1 2007 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes (98RP, 96JD), and 1 2007 Paul Autard "Cuvée Juline" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95WS, 94RP). Of the 2007 Domaine de Cristia Vieilles Vignes, Wine Advocate writes: "The greatest wine from this estate to date is unquestionably their 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. Made from 100% old-vine Grenache that was brought up in a combination of different sized barrels, some of which were new, it offers an incredible bouquet of black raspberries, caramelized cherries, violets, garrigue and lavender. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Giuseppe e Figlio Mascarello "Monprivato" Barolo (97RP, 96WS, 94VN). Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Barolo Monprivato is stunningly beautiful. Monprivato is seldom this rich when it is young. It is most often intensely aromatic, mid-weight and frequently out of balance, especially right after bottling. The 2007 is none of those things. It is a rich, dramatic wine endowed with tons of fruit and a sweeping, enveloping personality. It is also primary and at the beginning of what is likely to be a long, long life. Despite its seeming fragility, Monprivato is one of the most long-lived of all Baroli, even in its weakest vintages. (AG)" (10/2011)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Giacomo Conterno "Cascina Francia" Barolo (96RP, 94JS, 94ST, 92WS). Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Barolo Cascina Francia is an unusual version of this benchmark wine. In 2007 Conterno decided against bottling his Monfortino. Conterno believes Nebbiolo can handle rain and humidity (hence his decision to make Monfortino in rainy years such as 1987 and 2002), but not drought. The result is a Cascina Francia that is unusually dark, rich and powerful. The floral, herbal notes that are typical in young Cascina Francia have been replaced by deeper notes of tar, smoke and licorice to match the layers of intense dark fruit. The 2007 is powerful and imposing from start to finish. It is going to be a fascinating Barolo to follow over the coming years and decades. (AG) 96+" (10/2011)

Wine Advocate: "Following the brilliant success of Kistler’s 2007s, Steve Kistler and his sidekick, Mark Bixler, deserve kudos for what they have achieved in the more challenging 2008 vintage. This is the first vintage in which 100% of the fermentations were indigenous, and, fortunately, all their Sonoma Coast vineyards were far enough south that they were not tainted by any of the smoke from the ferocious fires that spread through Mendocino. Compelling aroma of lemon, white peach, minerals, crushed stone and licorice. Dense, spicy and aromatic, with a lovely edge of acidity framing and lifting the creamy flavors of peach nectar, spices, rock and minerals. I was so excited to see this on the Douglas Laing list I jumped at the chance to taste this distillate. When the samples arrived I knew we had something special. Some might point to this barrel and exclaim about the price, and yes compared to many lesser names, this is an expensive 18 year old. But compared to other single barrel Bruichladdich this is EXTREMELY affordable. Single barrels of Bruichladdich from our friends at Dramfool traded for over $300 in the 10-12 year range. An 18 year from the Douglas Laing's rival Hunter Laing trades for over $400! So it's really a pretty good deal and simply the only old single barrel in the market. But all of that doesn't matter if you don't like how it tastes and for those expecting the big extracted wine-y style that many older Bruichladdichs exhibit (I'm looking at you Black Art) or even the toast-y character of the distillery 18, you'll be disappointed. Those who love the purity and character of old rugged Bruichladdich spirit on full display without any dressing or make-up - you'll rejoice. Let's see what we've got. The color is a minimalistic pale gold (0.3). The gorgeous nose offers classical aromatics - lemon oil, canary melons, cream of wheat, salty rocks, fresh salt meadows, butter cookies, barley tea, hints of industrial machinery, and old boats. The palate has plenty more of the lemon-y stuff with a big malt-y core and buttered salted biscuits. It's just a gorgeous old school version of this most modern malt that is seemingly not in existence elsewhere at the moment. Perhaps for some of the most discerning - this will be the whisky of the season.

Glen Elgin is among the Speyside distilleries that use traditional worm-tub condensers, where coiled copper pipes surrounded by cold water turn spirit vapour back into liquid. This 2007 single malt was aged for 18 years and bottled by Single Malts of Scotland from a single hogshead, offering a cask-specific expression of the distillery’s whisky in a 700ml bottle.
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Behrens & Hitchcock "The Heavyweight" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (92RP, 92ST, 91WS). Bid on this bottle of 2007 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru (96DC, 95BH, 94JG, 94RP, 94WS, 93VN). Decanter: "From the majestic 5.29ha holding of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti purchased from the Marey-Monge family in 1988 and replanted in the 1990s. Tasted recently, the 2007 was forward and accessible, with a pronounced floral cast to the high-toned pomegranate and cranberry fruit character. The nose is still fairly primary in nature but it is starting to show just a bit of earthy, smoky evolution. There is still plenty of grip on the palate, with firm tannins, fresh acidity and enough extract to carry this wine the distance. (CC)" (11/2019)

James Suckling: "Chalk soils drive Pinot Noir to make a style that has additional minerality here and compression. On the nose, there are white cherries, gentle spices and hints of almost peppery notes. There's spring honey too and some yeasty, darker mushroomy edges. The palate is silky, very composed, refined, elegant and powerful. It's the chardonnay that defines the palate here in a different way to the other Roederer Champagnes. Deep, sensual layers of fruit flow from the glass as this full-throttle, intense Barolo reveals its profound, breathtaking personality. The 2007 shows tons of Ginestra nuance, but with extra dimensions to the fruit that literally covers every nook and cranny of the palate. Tasting this next to the 2006 is quite a comparison, as both wines are fabulous. Readers who can should be sure to own bottles of both. A side-by-side comparison is sure to be fascinating as the wines develop over the coming years. This lovely sherried Speyburn is rather exotic and wild. Speyburn Distillery was founded in 1897 by John Hopkins in the Speyside village of Rothes, drawing its water from the nearby Granty Burn. The distillery is famously associated with Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, as Hopkins insisted on producing the first spirit before the end of that celebratory year, even as construction continued through a harsh Highland winter. Designed by Charles Doig, Speyburn quickly established itself as a reliable producer of clean, approachable Speyside malt. Ownership changed hands several times in the 20th century, including periods under Distillers Company Limited, and like many distilleries it experienced temporary closures during economic downturns and wartime. Today Speyburn operates under Inver House Distillers, producing single malt Scotch that balances traditional character with modern efficiency, while remaining rooted in its original late Victorian setting. This single sheery butt was aged for 16 years and bottled without chill-filtration or coloring at a natural cask strength of 58.3%. Expect a huge fruity nose offering of raspberry, plums and wild honey. On the palate plenty more fruit with soft milk chocolate and a long sweet herbal finish.
The 2007 Sassicaia (Cabernet Sauvignon) explodes onto the palate with masses of rich, opulent fruit that caress the palate with gorgeous length and a seamless beauty that is hard to fully capture. Dark wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and herbs develop in the glass. This is an especially bold, perhaps slightly uncharacteristic Sassicaia in its extroverted personality, but it is beautiful all the same. The inner perfume and sweetness carries through the long finish, where the sheer weight and glycerol of the fruit leaves a lasting impression. The 2007 is more than a worthy follow-up to the profound 2006. While it may lack that wine's freshness, structure and potential longevity, the 2007 is immensely appealing today, and should drink beautifully pretty much out of the gate. That said, Sassicaia is always the most restrained of Bolgheri's heavy hitters. This is a superb effort from Tenuta San Guido. (AG)
Beautifully complex and mineral with notes of chalk, blanched almonds, dried raspberries, rose petals, pink grapefruit, nutmeg and pink peppercorns. Complex, tight and structured, with a medium to full body, plenty of strength yet elegant. Tight bubbles. Long, firm and savory. Single parcel pinot noir, 100% vinified in oak barrels. No malo. Disgorged May 2023. 3.8g/L dosage. Drink or hold. (CN)
The pinot-based fruit underlying this wine is in evidence because there is an abundance of citrus, baked bread and floral characters that include rose and acacia blossom scents on the utterly transfixing nose, there are also background wisps of various red berry nuances. There is a wonderful and beguiling texture to strikingly complex, intense and vibrant flavors that possess a highly refined mouth feel thanks to the ultra-fine bead of the supporting mousse that shapes the focused and gorgeously long finale that is agreeably dry but not really austere. I was knocked out not only but the texture but also the imposing depth and while these two elements render the '07 VVF approachable, it's clear that this should generously repay extended keeping. In short, this is a genuinely great effort.

Bid on this bottle of 2007 Kongsgaard "The Judge" Napa Valley Chardonnay (98RP, 95ST, 94VN). Wine Advocate: "A special selection of the top barrels (125-150 cases produced), the 2007 Chardonnay The Judge is more backward than the regular Chardonnay, revealing a liqueur of rocks-like character intermixed with hints of almond paste, tropical fruits, quince, and mango. Its incredible length, richness, and depth suggest this wine will benefit from 1-2 years of bottle age, and should keep for over a decade. From a top vintage for proprietor/winemaker John Kongsgaard, the 2007 Chardonnays are among the finest he has made to date. They combine great richness and bold flavor profiles with extraordinary minerality and definition. (RP) 98+" (12/2009)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée Réservée" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95RP, 95WS, 94VN). Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Reservée (of which I was lucky to find a magnum on a Paris bistro’s wine list a week after my tasting at the estate) is a brilliant effort that ranks alongside the colossal 2003 Cuvee Reservee. A blend of approximately 85% Grenache, 8-9% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre and other varietals from 50-100+ year old vines aged in foudre, it exhibits a dense plum/purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of beef blood, grilled herbs, barbecue smoke, lavender, sweet cassis and kirsch and a hint of Asian soy. The wine possesses a fabulous texture, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a seamless integration of tannin, acidity and alcohol. Certainly the alcohol level is pushing 16% in this wine. (RP)" (10/2010)
