Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Taittinger "Comtes de Champagne" Brut Blanc de Blancs (98JS, 97DC, 97VN, 95JG, 94WS). James Suckling: "After almost 10 years on the lees and 10 years after disgorgement, this is showing nervy minerality, flintiness and oyster-shell characteristics, alongside dried pineapple and lemon peel. It's electric and lively on the palate with so much brightness. Tight, seamless bubbles. Unbelievably fresh and long. Bottled in 2005 and disgorged in 2014. Drink or hold." (07/2024)

Pride Mountain "Vintner's Select Cuvée - Mountain Top Vineyard" Sonoma County Merlot

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Pride Mountain "Vintner's Select Cuvée - Mountain Top Vineyard" Sonoma County Merlot (92ST, 92WE, 91CG, 91WS). Wine Enthusiast: "Pride's regular '04 Merlot was very good. This one's better. Intensely rich and concentrated in the way of mountain wines, it shows huge, ripe cherry marmalade, black raspberry pie filling, rum and cola, mocha-choca and Asian spice flavors, enriched by smoky oak. Any really ripe wine can do that, but only one from great coastal vineyards can achieve this balance of acids and tannins. " (03/2007)

Pride Mountain "Reserve" Sonoma-Napa Counties Cabernet Sauvignon
2004 Pride Mountain "Reserve" Sonoma-Napa Counties Cabernet Sauvignon

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Pride Mountain "Reserve" Sonoma-Napa Counties Cabernet Sauvignon (96RP, 95WE, 94CG). Wine Advocate: "The two flagship wines of this brilliant estate, which straddles the Sonoma and Napa county lines at the top of Spring Mountain, include the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot). Sixty-eight percent of the fruit comes from Sonoma and 32% from Napa. It exhibits classic notes of creme de cassis, licorice, cedarwood, incense and a hint of toasty oak in the background. Full-bodied, opulent, profound deep, rich and full with velvety edges, the tannin can be detected, but it is wonderfully integrated in this mountain-styled Cabernet. It continues Pride’s impressive track record with these special cuvees. The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve can be drunk young or cellared for two decades or more. More nuances and complexity will undoubtedly emerge over the years. (RP)" (04/2014)

Superripe, slightly roasted aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice pastille and wild spices, with hints of mocha, truffle and minerals emerging with aeration. Fat, chocolatey and full, with plush, somewhat grapey flavors of currant, black plum, loam and menthol. Chunky, broad and dry wine, finishing with slightly drying tannins. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Merlot, it possesses a saturated purple color, a sweet nose of black currants, licorice, incense and subtle vanilla, medium to full body, significant power and a Pauillac-like cedary, creme de cassis style. Kistler "Cuvée Elizabeth-Bodega Headlands" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
2004 Kistler "Cuvée Elizabeth-Bodega Headlands" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Bid on this bottle of 2004 Kistler "Cuvée Elizabeth-Bodega Headlands" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ((96-98RP)). Wine Advocate: "Bordering on perfection, the 2004 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands (from Kistler’s new vineyard planted on the Sonoma Coast) offers up sweet plum, forest floor, and violet scents along with a La Tache-like, ethereal, floral, and black raspberry-like character. This prodigious, deep ruby/purple-colored Pinot possesses fabulous concentration as well as a layered, multidimensional palate, wonderful fruit, sweet tannin, and good acidity. It should age beautifully for 10-12 years. Interestingly, Steve Kistler planted this vineyard with the old Calera clone, which is rumored to be a suitcase clone pulled out of the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti grand cru vineyards. Wine Advocate: "Cool and precise, the 2004 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur is a youthful classic, offering up pretty much everything one could want in a 13-year-old Valmur. Opening in the decanter with a nose of green apple, iodine, oyster shell and a touch of smoky reduction, on the palate the wine is full-bodied, three-dimensional and rock solid at the core, with excellent concentration and cut and a long, penetrating finish. Ausone, St-Émilion
2004 Ausone, St-Émilion
98W&S
95WS
94RP
93ST

Tasted from barrel in 2005, this was among the best wines of the vintage, with limestone-soil character coming through the fresh brightness of fruit. Ausone was all potential energy then, and it has only improved in the two years since. The wine shares the resonant depths of the ancient limestone caves at Ausone, as the flavors echo through the finish. It starts off from a small place, a sweet confection that brings roasted blueberries to mind, the caramelized oak tasting like the edge of charred fat on extremely fine grilled beef. Over the course of several days, the wine becomes increasingly more subtle and serious in tone, with delicate red fruit, gracious mineral-inflected tannins and detailed flavors that last effortlessly. This Ausone will live for decades.

93TA

The 2004 Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva is very open, expressive and aromatic right away—as soon as it was poured into the glass—while the Tondonia took time to open up. This has a very elegant nose, and despite having less Garnacha than the Tondonia, it has a more Garnacha nose, a little heady with notes of cherries in liqueur and iodine (think Rayas). It has an elegant texture, very fine tannins and pungent flavors, and it's persistent and powerful while keeping balance and freshness. The Bosconia Vineyard is a cooler vineyard that delivers fresher wines; the grapes were picked quite late, from the 20th of October, later than the ones from the Tondonia vineyard. Only 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019. Some of these vintages have had a much longer élevage, though not necessarily all in barrel, as the wines also spent time in the ancient oak vats.(LG)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2004 Peter Michael "L'Esprit des Pavots" Knights Valley Bordeaux Blend ((90-92RP), (90-92ST)). Wine Advocate: "The second wine, which is called L’Esprit des Pavots, is a noteworthy wine. The 2004 is soft, round, and a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. This 121-acre estate with 114 producing acres of vineyard all located in Knight’s Valley continues to be at the top of their game and I can’t recommend the wines highly enough. (RP)" (12/2007)

The 2004 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a beautiful bottle that is just starting to blossom, but is clearly built for the long haul and will be drinking far better a decade down the road. The bouquet is deep and nascently complex, wafting from the glass in a mix of cherries, red plums, toasted coconut, Rioja spice tones, a touch of mustard seed and a topnote of cigar smoke. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and tangy, with a lovely core, excellent soil inflection, fine-grained tannins and lovely length and grip on the nascently complex finish. This is very easy to drink already, but it has not yet developed the full panoply of Tondonia complexity yet and will be even better with another half dozen years of bottle age. A lovely bottle.

LaRoche-Vacquie 22 Year Old "Single Oak" Batch LRV-01 Single Cask #81 Cask Strength Haut-Armagnac (750ml)
2004 LaRoche-Vacquie 22 Year Old "Single Oak" Batch LRV-01 Single Cask #81 Cask Strength Haut-Armagnac (750ml)

LaRoche-Vacquié is one of the great revival stories in French spirits. Bruno and Sylvie Compagnon purchased this former apple and prune farm overlooking Lectoure in 1986, nearly a century after phylloxera had erased Armagnac production from the area. Bruno began replanting vines in 1990, helping resurrect Haut-Armagnac and earning a knighthood for his work in 1997. This astonishing 2004 vintage comes from cask #81 bis, matured for 22 years exclusively in French sessile oak from Tronçais and bottled in 2026 at its natural strength of 55.7% ABV. It is a true single-cask Armagnac, neither reduced nor filtered, drawn from a barrel that is now exhausted. Production begins with estate-grown Ugni Blanc and Colombard cultivated on limestone, clay, and chalk soils. The wine is distilled only once before entering oak, preserving the character of both vintage and place. The Compagnons converted the property to organic farming in 2008, use no pesticides, and have powered the estate with solar energy since 2011. Every bottle is sealed, dated, labeled, and numbered by hand. Haut-Armagnac accounts for only about 1% of total Armagnac production, and LaRoche-Vacquié is the only producer in the appellation with vintages extending back to 1991. A 22-year-old cask-strength release from this nearly lost terroir would be rare under any circumstances; with only 24 bottles remaining from the finished cask, this is truly microscopic.

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Castello dei Rampolla "Vigna d'Alceo" Toscana (98VN, 96WS, 95RP, 94ST, 94WE). Vinous: "The 2004 d'Alceo is off the charts. Freshly cut flowers, mint and dark red berries are all finely knit in a fabric of superb elegance and pure pedigree. It is fascinating to watch the evolution of Vigna d'Alceo from a wine of power to a wine of finesse, and 2004 is the inflection point in that arc. The silkiest and most refined tannins imaginable support an impeccable, layered finish peppered with dark red/black fruit, smoke, tobacco, licorice and savory herbs. Simply put, the 2004 is stunning. Bid on this magnum of 2004 Shafer "Hillside Select" Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L) (100WE, 99RP, 96VN, 96WS, 95W&S). Wine Enthusiast: "Shafer's 2004 Hillside Select is tremendous as a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that competes with its peers at the highest levels. It's always a fabulous wine, but in warm 2004, Shafer's amphitheater vineyard sheltered the grapes, ripening them to perfection yet protecting the “iron fist in a velvet glove” structure that André Tchelistcheff defined as Stags Leap. This 100% Cabernet is tremendous in cassis, black currant and mocha flavors, and the 100% new French oak provides perfect additions of smoke and caramel. " (03/2009)

In 2004, it is also a very faithful reflection of the vintage: fresh, lively and vital, with acidity and vibrant blackberry fruits very much up front. It is the product of a very long and cool growing season marked by heavy summer rains in some sectors of the region and then ideal conditions through to harvest. After a brutally torrid 2003, the vines responded by setting a huge crop. In fact, 2004 remains the most abundant vintage in the history of Champagne. The best wines, though, well, they have always impressed with their laser-like cut and focus. That’s exactly what comes through in the 2004 Dom Pérignon. Tasted from magnum, the 2004 shows all the linear energy and crystalline precision of the year, but with that extra magic that comes from fermentation and longer aging in the big bottle. The 2004 has long been one of my favorite Dom Pérignons. From magnum, it is especially captivating. (AG)" (12/2022)

Domenico Clerico "Percristina" Barolo
2004 Domenico Clerico "Percristina" Barolo

Bid on this bottle of 2004 Domenico Clerico "Percristina" Barolo (97RP, 97ST). Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Barolo Percristina is a bit more resolved than the Ciabot, yet, it, too, packs a serious punch. At the same time, the differences in pedigree between Ginestra and Mosconi are now quite evident as these two wines have taken slightly divergent paths. The Percristina is more marked by French oak, so the fruit is a bit less fresh and the wine is ever so slightly more evolved. In any other context, the 2004 Percristina would be dazzling. Here, it does play second fiddle, but not by much. A blast of mocha, raspberry jam, cinnamon and dried flowers hits the palate on the explosive finish. (AG)" (05/2015)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Laurent-Perrier "Cuvée Alexandra" Brut Rosé Champagne (96DC, 96VN, 95JS, 95RP, 95WE). Vinous: "Tasted from magnum, the 2004 Grande Cuvée Rosé Alexandra, Laurent-Perrier’s flagship Rosé is a blend of 80% Pinot Noir (on the skins) and 20% Chardonnay vinified together that has only been bottled seven times since 1982. From the very first taste, the 2004 is utterly spectacular. Rich, ample and vertical in feel, the 2004 is dazzling. Dried rose petal, star anise, tobacco, dried flowers, red berry fruit and earthy notes all grace this utterly exquisite Champagne. As good as the 2004 is today – and it is fabulous – it will be even better in another few years’ time. The 2004 has been nothing short of magnificent on both occasions I have tasted it so far. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne (99VN, 97JS, 97W&S, 97WE, 96DC, 96JG, 95BH). Vinous: "The 2004 Cristal is nuanced and classy right out of the gate. Hints of lemon confit, marzipan, tangerine oil, spice and chamomile are all suggestive of a Champagne that has arrived at its first inflection point of early maturity. The interplay of slightly more mature notes with a good deal of freshness makes for an incredibly delicious wine to enjoy now. As it turns out, I tasted the 2004 again the following day and found it even more vibrant than the bottles we served at this lunch. This remains one of my favorite vintages here. Two thousand and four was the highest-yielding vintage in Champagne at the time, yet the best wines have always been compelling. (AG)" (11/2024)

That’s a hard juggling act, but Pride pulls it off so well. Shows the lighter side of the Cabernet family, with a silky, almost delicate body framing cherry and oak flavors. Deep ruby-red. Captivatingly intense yet refined aromas of ripe red cherry, mint, smoke and black truffle, complicated by lovely mineral and floral elements. Ripe, rich and velvety on entry, then concentrated in the middle, with flavors of red cherry, cassis, spices, bay leaf, dark chocolate and espresso. Amazingly well balanced and fresh wine, with sound, bright acids supplying wonderful lift and precision and smooth, noble tannins adding considerable power and grace. The finish goes on for minutes, highlighted by an enchanting floral-mineral quality; in my experience, the appearance of this strong floral component (in the absence of herbal or peppery aromas and flavors more typical of lesser vintages) at this early stage of development is typical of the greatest versions of Sassicaia. One of the top dozen Sassicaia bottlings ever. (ST)

The finish is among the longest of any 2004 I tasted, and gorgeous levels of fruit and extract hide any notions of new oak. This cuvee tastes like a hypothetical blend of a great Pauillac, Pessac-Leognan and Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It should drink well over the next two decades... Although expensive, no one will complain about the quality in the bottle as they are clearly Napa Valley first-growths. (RP)" (04/2014)

Kongsgaard "Hudson Vineyard" Napa Valley Syrah
2004 Kongsgaard "Hudson Vineyard" Napa Valley Syrah

Bid on this 2-bottle of 2004 Kongsgaard "Hudson Vineyard" Napa Valley Syrah (93ST, 90RP). Of the 2004 Kongsgaard "Hudson Vineyard" Napa Valley Syrah, Int'l Wine Cellar writes: "Saturated medium ruby. Full-blown, varietally expressive nose offers dark berries, smoked meat, soy sauce, game, truffle, gunflint and melted chocolate. Then huge and palate-saturating, with Rhone-like flavors more expressive of the volcanic soil in Hudson's Q block than simple sweet varietal fruits. This is more full-blown and lower in acidity than the young 2005 but the pH is in the 3.8 range, which is lower than most of the top syrahs made from Hudson fruit. Kongsgaard noted that he picks this parcel on the early side. Finishes with big but ripe tannins and superb persistence." (06/2007)

Il Paradiso di Frassina "Gea" Sant'Antimo
2004 Il Paradiso di Frassina "Gea" Sant'Antimo

Il Paradiso di Frassina sits just north of Montalcino, a site inhabited since at least 1000 AD and restored beginning in 1999 by Carlo Cignozzi. The estate is renowned for its “Mozart Vineyard,” where more than a hundred speakers broadcast Mozart’s music among Sangiovese vines as part of long-term scientific research supported by the Universities of Florence and Pisa to study sound-wave effects on vine growth and resilience. The winery produces Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino using traditional methods, with grapes grown in a landscape shaped by Val d’Orcia’s soils and climate. The cellar continues the musical environment, integrating sound into both vineyard and aging practices.

Giuseppe Rinaldi "Cannubi San Lorenzo - Ravera" Barolo
2004 Giuseppe Rinaldi "Cannubi San Lorenzo - Ravera" Barolo

Bid on this bottle of 2004 Giuseppe Rinaldi "Cannubi San Lorenzo - Ravera" Barolo (93RP, 93VN). Vinous: "Giuseppe Rinaldi’s 2004 Barolo Cannubi (San Lorenzo)/Ravera is an unexpected treat on this otherwise dreary Manhattan winter day. Aromatically lifted, the 2004 remains quite fresh and brilliant in its flavors. The 2004 is a decidedly lithe, mid-weight Barolo from Rinaldi that will age on its vibrant acidity rather than structure. There is a lot to like in this delicate, feminine Barolo. (AG)" (12/2014)

Peter Michael "Les Pavots" Knights Valley Bordeaux Blend (1.5L)
2004 Peter Michael "Les Pavots" Knights Valley Bordeaux Blend (1.5L)

Bid on this magnum of 2004 Peter Michael "Les Pavots" Knights Valley Bordeaux Blend (1.5L) (93RP, 93ST, 90WS). Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Les Pavots is ripe and is a relatively similar blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine exhibits notes of forest floor intermixed with chocolate, blueberry, blackberry, espresso, and spice. It is strikingly more tannic, and closed compared to the 2005, which is almost the reverse of the vintage character. (RP)" (12/2007)

Clarendon Hills "Astralis" Syrah South Australia
2004 Clarendon Hills "Astralis" Syrah South Australia

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2004 Clarendon Hills "Astralis" Syrah South Australia (98RP, 98WE, 97WS, 96VN, 95JH). Wine Advocate: "One of Australia’s most prodigious Syrahs, Clarendon Hills’ 2004 Syrah Astralis is fashioned from vines planted in 1920, and spends time in 100% new French oak from the cooper, Cadus. It boasts off the charts intensity as well as an opaque purple color, and notes of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, roasted coffee beans, pepper, smoke, and a hint of sweet toasty oak. This full-bodied, rich, intense, backward Syrah needs 2-3+ hours in the decanter if one is going to approach it at this point in its life. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040+. (RP)" (10/2006)
