Sandeman Late Bottled Vintage Port
1997 Sandeman Late Bottled Vintage Port

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1997 Sandeman Late Bottled Vintage Port. Sandeman started in 1790 with George Sandeman, a Scott who set up a wine merchant business in London specializing in Port and Sherry. Today the Sandeman portfolio includes Port, Sherry, and Madeira. Robert Parker for the Wine Advocate had this to say about the historic producer: "Sandeman is one of the biggest and most conspicuous of the port houses, with extensive interests in the sherry business as well. They advertise significantly and their products are well-represented in virtually every American marketplace. The quality is quite good given the quantity of wine produced."

Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
1997 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

Bid on this bottle of 1997 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (92VN). Vinous: "The 1997 Lynch-Bages shows some degradation on the bricked rim. The bouquet is open-knit, fully mature with ferrous, undergrowth, leafy/autumnal scents. It's missing some fruit intensity, as you expect from a more challenging season. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp black fruit laced with orange rind, black pepper, cedar and tobacco. This shows the most cohesion towards the finish and displays a long, sustained aftertaste. This is a real turn-up for the books. (NM)" (07/2023)

Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
1997 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1997 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (97DC, 97JG, 95VN, 94JS). Decanter: "The 1997 is one of the modern-day icons from Martha's Vineyard, and only the second vintage to be produced after the 1993 replanting. A rich and complex bouquet of ripe black cherry, mint chocolate, cassis and mocha is the prelude to a plush, expansive palate with remarkable volume and intensity. The velvety quality of the tannins is particularly special. While this is certainly a ripe vintage, the Heitz team produced a wine with impeccable balance which is only just entering the beginning of its drinking window. Every time I encounter it, it seems better than the last. (WK)" (10/2017)

Dal Forno Romano Recioto di Valpolicella (375ml)
1997 Dal Forno Romano Recioto di Valpolicella (375ml)

Bid on this 2-half-bottle lot of 1997 Dal Forno Romano Recioto della Valpolicella (375ml) (98RP, 97VN), the legendary sweet red from Romano Dal Forno, the uncompromising Veneto master whose Amarone and Recioto rank among Italy’s most sought-after wines. Made from Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes air-dried for up to six months and aged in French oak, it pours inky black with the thick consistency of olive oil. Wine Advocate writes: “Tones of chocolate, hickory smoke, prune, cinnamon cake, black plum, root beer, crushed granite and licorice have the bright intensity of primary colors on a painters’ wheel. The mouthfeel is solid, thickly concentrated and delightfully sweet... Almost indestructible, a wine like this will age longer than most. (ML)” (10/2013)

Heitz Cellar Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
1997 Heitz Cellar Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Bid on this bottle of 1997 Heitz Cellar Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Notes on the vintage from Heitz Cellars: "After several short vintages, the 1997 crop was extremely large, bringing production levels back to meet demand. With budbreak occurring a month early, the vineyards went into bloom with a great fruit set and a large crop. Except for one hot week in August, the summer days and nights were consistent and moderate. With most vineyards reaching their maturity, light rains arrived in mid-September. The vintage was characterized by 'a uniformity of ripeness especially in Napa Valley where the Cabernets were extraordinarily deep in color, forward in black fruit flavors, and refined with their mature tannins."

Bid on this bottle of 1997 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (100RP, 97WS, 95WE, 94ST). Wine Advocate: "An inky/plum/purple color is accompanied by a stunning bouquet of violets, charcoal, creme de cassis and a hint of toast. Prodigious when it hits the palate with a full-bodied expansiveness, there is not a hard edge to be found in the 1997, only velvety tannins, compelling depth and fruit intensity, and stunning purity. Capanna Brunello di Montalcino 1.5L
1997 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino 1.5L

Bid on this magnum of 1997 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino 1.5L. 94 Points Wine Spectator This shows amazing aromas of dried and fresh spices, a well as ripe furits. Full-bodied, with firm and very reserved tannins, yet it's powerful and dense. Best after 2006 JS........... Greg St.Clair's Notes: Capanna 1250 cases produced Inviting, seductive, warm fruits flow from the glass; they seem to thicken the air around you. The wine is dark, dense, concentrated fruit, thick and muscular, broad on the palate with leather, green tea, spice and warm, plumy fruit, soft melting chocolate, powerful, linear structure underlies the fleshy exterior of the wine, long finish, very, very good. One of my favorites wines of the vintage. Capanna sits just north of Montalcino up the hill from Montosoli and west of Valdicava's Madonna del Piano vineyard in a Cretaceous clay and silt soil called Galestro that is famous in Tuscany for being associated with high quality wines.

E. Guigal "La Landonne" Cote Rotie
1997 E. Guigal "La Landonne" Cote Rotie

Bid on this bottle of 1997 E. Guigal "La Landonne" Cote Rotie (98RP, 97WS, 95VN). Wine Advocate: "The nearly perfect 1997 Cote Rotie La Landonne is an amazing achievement for the vintage. An astonishing saturated purple color is followed by scents of licorice, roasted meats, coffee, toasty oak, plums, and blackberries. The wine is extremely smoky, earthy, and terroir-driven. This 1997 offers exceptional expansiveness on the palate, sweet tannin, low acidity, and a ripe, robust finish. One to three years of cellaring is warranted, but it is capable of lasting for two decades." (04/2002)

Bid on this 2-half-bottle lot of 1997 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml) (97TWI, 96RP, 96WS, 93VN). The Wine Independent: Medium amber in color, the 1997 d'Yquem prances out of the glass with flashy notes of candied ginger, candle wax, musk perfume, and lemon drops leading to hints of creme brulee, praline, and preserved peaches. The palate is very light on its feet and zippy, with a crisp backbone breaking through the bright stone fruit and citrus flavors, finishing long with a lemony lift. Auchroisk 26 Year Old "Old Malt Cask 25th Anniversary" Single Bourbon Barrel Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
1997 Auchroisk 26 Year Old "Old Malt Cask 25th Anniversary" Single Bourbon Barrel Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

In the hands of an independent bottler, Auchroisk really gets a chance to step out of the shadows of the big blends. While it’s naturally a delicate and polite spirit, the 100-proof treatment from Old Malt Cask gives it some much-needed backbone, highlighting a hidden spiciness and a creamy mouthfeel that usually gets lost. It’s the kind of whisky that doesn't try to overpower you with peat or heavy sherry; instead, it offers a balanced, crisp experience that showcases the pure, honeyed essence of Speyside malt. This one starts with a bright fresh orchard on the nose, surprising for its age, but emblematic of the stunning distillate and its ability to mature ever so patiently. Apples and pears, ensconced in orange blossom honey, encase the palate as it takes you on a journey through the Scottish countryside. Floral and elegant with a touch of winter spice, this is a beautiful release and one to savor and enjoy while it lasts.

Wine Advocate: "A virtually perfect effort is the 1997 Sperss, which represents the essence of truffles, earth, and black cherries in its striking aromatics and multidimensional, opulent, full-bodied palate. The acidity seems low because of the huge glycerin levels and prodigious concentration of fruit, but I suspect it is normal in the scheme of oenological measurement. (RP)" (06/2001)

Tenuta San Leonardo "San Leonardo" Trentino-Alto Adige
1997 Tenuta San Leonardo "San Leonardo" Trentino-Alto Adige

Bid on this bottle of 1997 Tenuta San Leonardo "San Leonardo" Trentino-Alto Adige (95RP). Wine Advocate: "The 1997 San Leonardo comes from a landmark vintage that was characterized by warm temperatures and very little rainfall. In fact, 1997, 1995 and 1990 are similar in terms of the general lack of rain. Of course, that dryness helped to contribute to greater concentration and intensity of fruit. This is a powerful and gorgeous expression that bursts open with dark fruit aromas, spice, leather, cola, tar, licorice, wet earth, porcino mushroom and grilled herbs. Of particular beauty are the delicate floral tones of violet and rose that linger softly in the background. The wine is full and generous with excellent tannin management. There are no sharp edges here. Instead, the wine is round and soft on the palate. This is a true standout that will stand the test of time. It should be decanted up to three hours before serving. 95+ (ML)" (12/2014)

Of the 1997 Luigi Pira "Margheria" Barolo , Wine Advocate writes: "Luigi Pira, who has the most massive hands I have ever encountered on a vigneron, has fashioned a more structured effort with his 1997 Barolo Margheria. This wine has become more delineated and civilized after spending time in cask and foudre. Tell-tale notes of kirsch liqueur, dried flowers, rose petals, licorice, soy, leather, and tobacco combine with scents of seaweed, chocolate, and red/black fruits. The Margheria possesses firm tannin and muscle. It is a sensationally concentrated, full-bodied, powerful Barolo in need of 2-4 years of cellaring. It should drink well between 2004-2020. Sangenís i Vaqué "Clos Monlleo" Priorat
1997 Sangenís i Vaqué "Clos Monlleo" Priorat

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1997 Sangenís i Vaqué "Clos Monlleo" Priorat. Sangenís i Vaqué traces its roots to Porrera, where the Monlleó side of the family had vineyard land in place well before 1700. Pere Sangenís and Conxita Vaqué began replanting these terraces in 1978 and started producing wine in 1979 in the old cellar of Conxita’s grandfather, Josep Simó, who had made wine there from 1886 until his death. The estate farms steep llicorella slopes around Porrera, working organically and harvesting by hand. Production sits around 25, 000 to 30, 000 bottles annually, with fermentation and aging carried out in their historic underground cellars. Today the family continues to balance traditional Priorat methods with updated practices, with Maria Sangenís and Roger Simó helping lead the project.

One of the most compelling Cabernet Sauvignons Nils Venge has produced (and there have been many over the last 30 years) is his 1997 Venge Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Sadly, there are only 300 cases of this 100% new oak-aged effort. Tipping the scales at 14+% alcohol, it is a super-extracted, black/purple-colored effort displaying a gorgeous nose of creme de cassis intermixed with licorice, spice box, cedar, and smoke. Bid on this 1997 Ledaig 21 Year Old "Chieftain's" K&L Exclusive Single Sherry Butt Cask Strength Unchillfiltered Island Single Malt Scotch Whisky. The odd and wonderful Tobermory distillery is one of Scotland's most picturesque and divisive. Only the Jura Distillery has more disparate opinions of their products. But something that almost every peat lover can agree on is the fact that the distillery's peated line, Ledaig, is an absolute dream. It's remained in relative obscurity until recently. We've had a good deal of independents offer us Ledaig over the years, but it's almost always young stocks in very quiet hogsheads. That's simply because the mark is only produced a few weeks out of the year and is turning out to be pretty sought-after by drinkers across the world, so we're not seeing high quality older expressions very often. This distillery needs these barrels for their limited releases and rightfully so - there's nothing better than an old smoldering Ledaig in an active sherry.

Of the 1997 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Vinous writes: "The 1997 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is quite a bit more mature than the 1998 that precedes it in this tasting. The wine stands out most for its silky tannins and long, finessed finish. I don't see the 1997 hanging on for too much longer considering that the aromas and flavors are already very much on the forward side, but there is no question the wine has aged beautifully. 1997 Benrinnes 25 Year Old "Artist #15 - The Dark Side Of The Moon" La Maison Du Whisky Hand Selected Single Sherry Hogshead Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

******SPECIAL ORDER SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY - NEW YORK ARRIVAL IN 5-7 BUSINESS DAYS. NO REFUNDS OR RETURNS******* This 1997 Benrinnes preserves a distinctive chapter in the history of one of Speyside's most individual distilleries. Founded in 1826, Benrinnes survived a devastating flood, relocation and a major fire before a comprehensive rebuilding in the 1950s. Crucially, this vintage was produced during the era of its unusual partial triple distillation, a process subsequently replaced by conventional double distillation. Matured in sherry hogshead #9746 and bottled in 2025, this 27-year-old whisky is released under the Over 25 Years designation. The single cask yielded 221 bottles at a natural strength of 52.3% ABV. It joins La Maison du Whisky's Artist #15 The Dark Side of the Moon collection, a selection of six individual casks exploring sherry maturation across Highland and Speyside distilleries. The accompanying artwork is by South African artist Sthenjwa Luthuli, whose hand-carved and painted wooden panels reinterpret Zulu visual traditions through densely patterned contemporary compositions. The combination of a 1990s vintage, sherry hogshead maturation and Benrinnes' former distillation regime gives this release its particular historical significance.
