Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru "Champs Canet"
1996 Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru "Champs Canet"

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru "Champs Canet" (93RP, 92ST, 90BH). Wine Advocate: "The Puligny-Montrachet Les Champs-Canet possesses an intense, deeply rich, broad, and white peach-scented nose. Its displays a lace-like, elegant, and highly-defined, yet expansive and powerful medium-to-full-bodied character. Leesy notes, together with minerals, pears, and sweet oak are found in this exciting and seductive wine. I suggest drinking it between 2002 and 2007. This wine had been bottled one week prior to my visit, having spent 14 months on its lees. (PR)" (02/1998)

Of the 1996 Verget Chablis Grand Cru "Bougros" , Wine Advocate writes: " Guffens' Chablis offerings continue to enthrall me. Guffens most stunning Chablis in 1996 is the Chablis Bougros, a testimony to the greatness of the vintage and to his brilliant winemaking. It exhibits sublime lemon, mineral, flower, and wet stone aromatics as well as a feminine, silky, refined, classy, and medium-to-full-bodied personality. Raspberries, currants, roses, flint, and flavors reminiscent of a massive bouquet of freshly cut spring flowers are found in this complex and detailed beauty. Guffens put it best, 'I decided to throw away the Chardonnay and keep the flowers.' I suggest cellaring this gem until 2003 at the earliest, and drinking it over the subsequent 12 years. 1996 Paul Pernot Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Paul Pernot Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (92BH, 92JG). Burghound: "A gorgeous white flower, citrus peel and honeysuckle nose that now displays some secondary influence introduces detailed, precise and naturally sweet flavors that offer outstanding length and the old vines deliver a more concentrated mouth texture than most wines of the vintage. A lovely effort that is drinking perfectly now though should continue to do so for many years to come. Consistent notes with no premox issues for this wine until the most recent bottle which was completely premoxed through and through." (04/2013)

1996 Maison Leroy Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Folatières"

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Maison Leroy Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Folatières". Robert M. Parker writes: “I have said it so many times that it may seem redundant, but if you missed it in my 1990 tome, Burgundy, Lalou Bize-Leroy stands virtually alone at the top of Burgundy’s quality hierarchy. Because she is a perfectionist, and because she has had the courage to produce wines from low yields and bottle them naturally, without fining or filtration, she has been scorned by many Burgundy negociants, and even by the proprietors of other top domaines. Not only are they jealous, they are frightened of Bize-Leroy because they fear increasing pressure for lower yields and bio-dynamic farming. Anyone who loves great Burgundy, must realize that her wines embarrass much of what is produced in Burgundy.”

Of the 1996 Domaine Guy Robin Chablis Grand Cru "Blanchot" Reserve, From importer North Berkeley Imports writes: "Domaine Guy Robin today is a winery reborn. Marie-Ange represents the fourth generation of vine growers in the family. It was her father Guy who slowly, parcel by parcel, purchased vineyards in the 1960s; yet it is Marie-Ange who has brought the winery to a level of greatness for which it was always destined. Simply put, there are few other Chablis estates with such a rich collection of original rootstock, and as a result, few other estates that deliver Chablis wines of such character and complexity..."

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1996 Joseph Drouhin "Les Clos" Chablis Grand Cru. 98 points Wine Spectator: "Watch out Montrachets! This may burst with violet, spice and floral aromas from all that new oak, but the wood is balanced by the sweet core of ripe flavors (pineapple, pear, mango and mandarin). Opulent and lush, this full-bodied Chablis is at its best on the silky, mineral-laden midpalate, which is nearly flawless. Lovely, long finish. Tempting now, but should improve with cellaring. Wine Advocate: "The smoke and charred oak scented Chablis Vaillons possesses unreal definition of tangy, flinty, and minerally flavors in its medium-to-full-bodied, and crisp personality. Powerful, strident and superbly-balanced, it needs to be cellared until at least 2003, and will easily hold its peak through 2009. Bid on this bottle of 1996 M. Chapoutier "Le Pavillon" Ermitage (97JD, 97RP, 94WS, 93VN). Wine Advocate: "A wine that just screams “Granite!” is the sensational 1996 Ermitage le Pavillon, which comes all from the les Bessards lieu-dit on the western side of Hermitage hill. As fine, seamless and layered as they come, this beauty offers classic notes of powdered rocks, cassis, graphite, burning embers and flowers. Full-bodied, concentrated and massive on the palate, you can almost feel the rocky soils this wine comes from on the palate, and it still, even at age 20, has loads of mouth-coasting, sweet tannin emerging on the finish. It’s a tiny step back from the mammoth 1995, yet is still an incredible wine that has another two decades of prime drinking, and will keep even longer. (JD)" (08/2016)

1996 Domaine Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru "Valmur"

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Domaine Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru "Valmur" (97JG, 94RP, 93WS). John Gilman: "This was the second time that Bernard Raveneau served the 1996 Valmur to me after running through a lineup of the current vintage out of barrel, and I suspect that I may see this magnificent wine again in the cellars until he is convinced that I understand that his wines do not have any issues with premox. His generosity is very much appreciated, as perfect bottles of the ’96 Valmur are indeed profound. The bouquet on this pristine bottle just soars from the glass in a mélange of apples, candied lemon peel, beeswax, kaleidoscopic minerality and a topnote of spring flowers. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and rock solid to the core, with laser-like focus, brilliant balance and simply stunning length and grip on the very pure and very magical finish... This bottle was utterly profound. (Drink between 2009-2030) 97" (07/2009)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Salon "Le Mesnil" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne (100DC, 100JD, 99RP, 99TWI, 99VN, 98JS, 97BH). Jeb Dunnuck: "A stunning wine through and through, the 1996 Champagne Salon is one for the ages. Tasted at 28 years old in August 2024, it felt youthful and pristine. The house's stylistic focus is fully resonant yet has so much life yet to give, retaining a calling card of compact tension and nerve. On opening, it poured a medium straw hue, hardly suggesting its age, and revealed aromatics of crushed seashells, lemon confit, crystalline salted caramel, and poached apples. The palate sets this wine apart, its mousse highly refined yet lively, with buoyant acidity and chalky richness expanding through the extraordinarily long finish. A profound bottle and a profound wine. (AF)" (10/2024)

Bid on this bottle of 1996 J.-F. Coche Dury Meursault "Rougeots" (95RP, 95WS, 94JG, 94ST). Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Meursault Rougeot has a killer nose that knocks the senses sideways with its intense mineralite that renders it more like a Chevalier-Montrachet. The palate has exquisite poise and harmony, a little more refined and controlled compared to the 1995 with again, a linear and taut, Puligny-inspired finish that is very long. Certainly, this is one of the finest Meursault Rougeot that I have tasted from the domaine. (NM)" (02/2014)

Domaine De Charron 29 Year Old Singel Barrel K&L Exclusive Bas-Armagnac (750ml)
1996 Domaine De Charron 29 Year Old Singel Barrel K&L Exclusive Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

The little house off the main road in Perquie does not look like it should contain one of the most singular stocks of spirit in Gascony, but that is part of Domaine de Charron’s magic. Claude Lartigue, a relative of the Darroze family, built Charron into something utterly its own: a tiny Bas-Armagnac domaine centered on Baco, producing only four to six barrels of brandy in a normal year. The cellar philosophy is almost shocking for the region. Charron is filled into new oak, then left alone, with no racking, no polishing, and no attempt to soften the edges into some anonymous house style. It is Armagnac made with the stubborn directness of great bourbon, yet anchored entirely in Gascon soil, local farming, and the peculiar power of Baco in Perquie. The chai itself is a revelation: small, orderly, beautifully maintained, and unusually immaculate by regional standards, the kind of place that tells you immediately the casks are being watched with quiet precision. This 1996 single barrel is exactly the sort of thing that makes our direct-import program so exciting. It represents a tiny output, an idiosyncratic producer, a vanishingly rare style, and a mature vintage that would be nearly impossible to recreate at scale. For whiskey drinkers looking beyond whiskey, and Armagnac lovers who prize character over polish, Charron remains one of the category’s great discoveries.

Caves São João "Quinta do Poço do Lobo" Tinto Reserva Bairrada
1996 Caves São João "Quinta do Poço do Lobo" Tinto Reserva Bairrada
92RP

The 1996 Reserva Quinta do Poço do Lobo is unoaked and comes in 13% alcohol. It has been seen before, when it seemed very fresh. It is mostly Baga (50%), with about 25% each of Moreto and Castelão (a dramatic change from the last stats I was given). This bottle is still impressive. It is very lush for a Baga-dominated blend, but the Baga provides typical earthiness and amber while the other grapes in the blend add a little flavor. Enlivening, its big acidity results in a juicy finish. Then, the tannins take over. The structure is somewhat better than the concentration, but there's enough. This is in many respects still a baby, if a rather rustic one. It will easily last another 15 to 20 years. (MS)

While it's the Médoc that tends to steal the limelight in this vintage, the 1996 Haut-Brion, the fruit of a strict selection, is a brilliant wine and comparatively underestimated today. Bid on this bottle of 1996 M. Chapoutier "De L'Orée" Ermitage Blanc (99RP, 94WS, 92ST). Wine Advocate: "It is no secret that I adore Chapoutier's luxury cuvee of white Hermitage called Cuvee L'Oree. Made from 90-year old vines and microscopic yields of 10-12 hectoliters per hectare, this wine flirts with perfection. It is a compelling white Hermitage. Made from 100% Marsanne, it is as rich and multidimensional as the fullest, most massive Montrachet money can buy. It is unctuously textured, yet extraordinarily and beautifully balanced. I suspect it will drink well early in life, and then shut down for a few years. It should last for 4-5 decades. The 1996 possesses some of the most amazing glycerin levels I have ever seen in a dry white wine. In short, this wine must be tasted to be believed. (RP)" (02/1999)

Old Forester "Barrel Reserve 96 - Olympic Games Commemorative Bottle" Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (1L)
1996 Old Forester "Barrel Reserve 96 - Olympic Games Commemorative Bottle" Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (1L)

Living in Kentucky, my familiarity with Old Forester runs deep. It only takes one sip—or even one sniff—to know it’s that particular dram beloved by local Louisvillians. That’s why encountering a rare Old Forester release such as this one is such a profound treat; Brown Forman’s bottling for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta is unique across the board. Released as a duty-free exclusive, this bottling was not officially licensed by the Olympic committee, and therefore does not say “Olympics”, “Atlanta”, or even “1996” on the bottle. Also strange, a decision was made to drop the classic “Old” from the brand name itself. Distilled during the distillery’s lean years and bottled right between their flagship products at 96 proof, the whiskey is at least 12 years old (though infuriatingly, the bottle doesn’t mention this either!) Despite these oddities, this bourbon holds its head high among the classic double-digit Old Forester releases such as Birthday Bourbon, which surfaced over 7 years later. The nose is lighter than expected, with notes of citrus, antique furniture, and green apple, with something slightly herbaceous, like the scent of a tomato leaf. The first sip ushers in that classic Old Forester cherry with an initial sweetness that quickly turns into graceful dry spice on the palate. Baking spice meets a wide range of fruit here, with orange oil accompanying fig, roasted walnut, and cinnamon. The finish is beautifully long and rich, ripe with caramel sweetness; reminds me of an old-timey candy shop with a faded hint of tobacco still in the air. Overall, it is remarkedly balanced; neither the proof nor the oak hits you over the head. Clean and classic, this bourbon is an easy sipper, with the time spent in oak leaning more towards elegance than boldness. These bottles are some of the few left in circulation, and were sourced directly from a long-time employee of Brown Forman in Kentucky. It is truly a whiskey from a bygone era; one that has slipped through the cracks and onto our shelves.

Isle Of Arran 27 Year Old "Vintage Bottlers Ltd" Rare Cask Series Single Sherry Butt #365 Non Chillfiltered Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
1996 Isle Of Arran 27 Year Old "Vintage Bottlers Ltd" Rare Cask Series Single Sherry Butt #365 Non Chillfiltered Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

This new bottler has some exciting new technology poised to change the Scotch industry. The Campbeltown Bond is one of the most forward-thinking warehouse concepts in Scotland, an autonomous system allowing bottlers to access and assess casks in minutes rather than weeks in a traditional dunnage. This extraordinary bottling from the Isle of Arran represents a rare glimpse into the early years of one of Scotland’s youngest distilleries, long before meaningful stocks of mature whisky were available. Distilled on May 22nd, 1996 and bottled on April 22nd of 2024 at a natural cask strength of 48.7% ABV, this 27-year-old single cask (#365) yielded just 208 bottles, making it an exceptionally scarce example of fully mature island whisky. The style is both rugged and refined, opening with a deep, slightly tarry richness that quickly softens into creamy fudge and sweet confectionary notes. The palate leans into nutty toffee and toasted grains, with a gentle warmth that speaks to its age without overwhelming the spirit. The finish is long and composed, fading through caramelized sugar and dark berry fruit. A rare opportunity to experience truly mature Arran, a category that remains vanishingly small.

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Bruno Giacosa "Villero di Castiglione Faletto" Barolo ((92-95RP), 95VN, 94JG, 94ST, 92WS). Vinous: "For many years, the 1996 Barolo Villero was the poor man's (or woman's) great Giacosa, as it delivered all the classic Giacosa signatures and yet was priced well below his better known wines. Sadly, that time is long gone. As for the 1996 Villero, it is still fabulous. An exotic mélange of spice and balsamic notes make a strong opening statement. The 1996 has always had crazy aromatics, as is the case again tonight. Translucent and inviting, with tons of Nebbiolo character, the 1996 speaks to the truest essence of this Castiglione Falletto site. This is another superb 1996 from Bruno Giacosa. Sadly, the 1996 is also the last Barolo Giacosa made from Villero. And we are all poorer for that. (AG)" (10/2017)

Wine Advocate: "The saturated ruby/purple-colored 1996 Barolo Falletto exhibits an extraordinary nose of smoke, earth, white truffles, black fruits, licorice, and floral scents. Extremely massive, with layers of concentration, high tannin, a muscular personality, and a 40+ second finish, this classic, young Barolo will require patience. Why can't I turn my body clock back twenty years? (RP)" (08/1999)

Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello "Monprivato" Barolo
1996 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello "Monprivato" Barolo

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello "Monprivato" Barolo (96VN, 95JG, 93ST). Vinous: "When I was a graduate student at MIT, I could buy all the 1996 Monprivato I wanted at Marty's in Allston for $50 a bottle. Sadly, those days are long gone. As for the wine, it remains immortal. Dark, penetrating and beautifully layered, Mauro Mascarello's 1996 Barolo Monprivato captures the truest essence of this vineyard. The Mascarello Monprivato is usually a more delicate, refined wine, but in 1996 it is decidedly virile, as so many wines are. This is a fabulous bottle of one of the reference point wines in 1996. Readers who own it should be absolutely thrilled. (AG)" (10/2017)

Benrinnes 17 Year Old "SMWS 36.82 - A Grand Dame In A Greenhouse - Rare Release" Cask Strength Single Barrel Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
1996 Benrinnes 17 Year Old "SMWS 36.82 - A Grand Dame In A Greenhouse - Rare Release" Cask Strength Single Barrel Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Benrinnes 17 Year Old "SMWS 36.82 - A Grand Dame In A Greenhouse - Rare Release" Cask Strength Single Barrel Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky. We're continuing our relationship with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society with this 17 year old cask of Benrinnes; a Speyside distillery that we've grown quite fond of here at K&L. Bottled at cask strength, this whisky is a bold blast of rich vanilla and toffee. Perhaps the Society's own notes say it best, however: "Warm velvet, dusty carpet and oil paintings. A rhumptof of red apples and rhubarb. Pea shoots and tomato leaves in a greenhouse. Juicy sultanas then liquorice and cola cubes. Rhubarb and custard chews with cinder toffee. Lemon posset and cookie dough to finish." That's exactly what we were thinking when we picked out this delicious cask! In all seriousness, this whisky is to die for. One of only 198 bottles from this fantastic cask.

Ceretto "Bricco Rocche" Barolo
1996 Ceretto "Bricco Rocche" Barolo

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Ceretto "Bricco Rocche" Barolo ((92-96RP), 95DC, 95WS, 93VN, 93W&S). Wine Advocate: "This wine exhibits a saturated ruby color with purple nuances. Additionally, it is rich, with lots of extract, tannin, and body. Ceretto's opaque ruby/purple-colored 1996 Barolo Bricco Rocche is sensational stuff. It combines explosive levels of fruit, glycerin, and extract with an uncanny sense of elegance and finesse. There are copious quantities of black cherry fruit, intermixed with raspberries, cedar, spicy oak, licorice, and tar... terrific, complex, multidimensional Barolo. (RP)" (08/1999)

Giacomo Conterno "Cascina Francia" Barolo
1996 Giacomo Conterno "Cascina Francia" Barolo

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Giacomo Conterno "Cascina Francia" Barolo (95VN, 94JG). Vinous: "The 1996 Barolo Cascina Francia is a prototypical wine for the vintage. Hard as nails and completely forbidding when it was first released, the 1996 has developed into a stellar wine. A host of orange peel, iron, rose petal, melted road tar, licorice and plum notes give the 1996 its layers of aromatic nuance. Brooding and inward, the 1996 needs several hours of air to be at its best. Tasted again a day later, the 1996 started to soften and show a more delicate side of its personality. Well-stored bottles will drink well for 20-30 years, perhaps more. (AG)" (11/2016)
