The K&L Liquors' 35 Year Old "Sideburns" K&L Exclusive Single Vintage Speyside Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
1989 The K&L Liquors' 35 Year Old "Sideburns" K&L Exclusive Single Vintage Speyside Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

After 18 years of buying spirits for K&L, this special parcel may be my crowning achievement. Just a few years ago, it would have been nearly unfathomable that we could gain access to stocks of this quality at such low prices. We have, of course, bottled similar whiskies before. Years back, we secured a 1991 version from Hunter Laing, and only last year we offered a Faultline barrel from 1998 that sold out almost immediately. Now, we bring you another "Single Vintage Blended Malt" a full decade that barrel's senior for exactly the same price. It is an absolute coup and, if I’m honest, may get me in a little trouble, but that surely will not stop me. My style has always been to ask forgiveness rather than permission. The true challenge with stocks like this is how you label them. We cannot, under any circumstances, place the distillery name on the label, even though it is beyond doubt where the whisky comes from. The once-accepted trade name Burnside belongs to our dear friends at Cadenhead, and out of respect (and good sense, given their well-known litigious nature) we would never infringe on it. So the question becomes, what do we call this whisky? Our friends at Duncan Taylor sold us that wonderful barrel for our Faultline label that they dubbed “The Huntley,” a reference to their hometown. That option was off the table for us. After some consideration, we settled on a playful nod to our friends in Campbeltown: “The Sideburns.” We are not the first to use the name, but ours is plural, because who on earth needs just one Side-burn? Needless to say, this is one of the most outrageous deals I have ever had the honor of brokering for our shop. It represents the pinnacle of my ongoing effort to push back against one of the most damaging trends in our industry: the erosion of value for the end consumer. If you destroy the primary market for great whisky by pushing prices beyond reason, you eventually destroy the market itself. Too many producers have forgotten the first rule of selling anything: give customers what they want at a price they can afford. Start with the customer’s experience and build the system backward from there, rather than forcing corporate projections and marketing jargon down their throats. What do customers want? Great old malt whisky. But in today’s marketplace, finding a bottle over 25 years old that delivers real value in the glass is nearly impossible. Certainly there are other ways brands create value for their customers through lifestyle, image, luxury packaging, or grand storytelling. But if the true measure is taste—and for me it always is—you will struggle to point to a single product that offers what this whisky does at anywhere near this price. This parcel is, without exaggeration, one of the finest opportunities ever presented to lovers of Scotch worldwide. I hope this is only the beginning. If we can continue to secure parcels like this through new channels, then perhaps we can begin to chip away at the barriers keeping customers from enjoying extraordinary old whisky rather than just looking at them. For now, I am confident in saying this is easily the greatest Scotch deal K&L has offered in its 40-plus year history.

Juicy and drinkable, mint leaf, tobacco, savoury blue fruit, cumin and incense, creamy as it opens up. This kept on delivering, really holding up over several hours of being open and enjoyed. No Malbec in rhe more ecent blends of Gruaud Larose, but this was during the beginning of vineyard restructuring under Suntory (owners since 1989) and a reminder of the 19th century years when this was the dominant grape of the Médoc. Tasted out of magnum, Philippe Carmaigac cellar master, 35% new oak.

The K&L Liquors' 36 Year Old "Enviable" (Balvenie) Batch #2 K&L Exclusive Single Vintage Speyside Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
1989 The K&L Liquors' 36 Year Old "Enviable" (Balvenie) Batch #2 K&L Exclusive Single Vintage Speyside Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

The wild success of the Sideburns 35 Year has rattled the cage of more than one large company in Scotland. If you haven’t seen my review of that product, I highly recommend taking a look: https://shop.klwines.com/products/details/1918829 . The short version is this: we may be on the precipice of a new golden age of Scotch, and K&L is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the market asymmetry. While our marketing of the previous batch was met with side eyes and raised eyebrows from the original owners of the stocks and trademarks, other suppliers with similar inventories saw it as a signal. This was an opportunity. It would seem our prayers have been answered. Another incredible value in old malt has landed in our lap, and this time the deal is even more impressive. There are, of course, differences in the stock. This distillate comes entirely from November 1989 and was matured in refill hogsheads, rather than the first-fill sherry hogsheads of Batch #1. The proof is slightly lower, but still a robust 47-48% for a whisky of such advanced age. Remember, Scotch typically loses up to 1% ABV per year and enters the cask around 63%. So yes, older, slightly lower in proof, and without the fashionable sherry influence, yet 25% cheaper. If you ask me, old malt like this absolutely thrives in refill hogsheads. While I often insist on first or second fill for younger whisky, at this age the nuance of second or third fill can be profoundly beneficial. In any case, if it’s not already clear, this malt is drawn almost entirely from one of Speyside’s most beloved distillers. Search “Burnside,” the Cadenhead/Springbank-owned blended malt, if you want clues to the source. We’re being intentionally careful about naming names, but suffice it to say this parcel comes from the cellars of one of the industry’s most powerful blending houses. Whether it was once destined as a top note for premium blends or simply forgotten stock, it now stands as perhaps the greatest value I’ve ever offered. Twice in six months. It really does feel like the start of something bigger.

Bid on this bottle of 1989 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet Grand Cru (99RP, 98WS, 95JG, 95VN). Wine Advocate: "Not surprisingly, this is another awesome example from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. If pure, honeyed thickness and glycerin are what you are looking for, there is not a more concentrated Chardonnay produced in the world. The only thing I have ever seen from the new world that approaches a wine such as this in nectar-like richness were the 1978 and 1980 Chalone, but that winery has now resorted to making much lighter, more commercially-oriented products. There is nothing commercial about this 1989 Montrachet. ...here is a bottle that will offer an awesome nose of honeyed, buttery, apple fruit, intertwined with aromas of smoked nuts and toasty new oak. In the mouth, it is almost greasy because of its extraordinary viscosity, thickness, and richness... (RP)" (02/1992)

The long, fine-grained finish lets a perfumy singed cedar accent linger. A beauty. (JM)" (11/2014)

Bid on this 2-half-bottle lot of 1989 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml) (100JA, 99RP, 97DC, 97ST, 97VN, 97WS). Jane Anson: This took home the audience award at the 67 Pall Mall tasting that I was hosting, with good reason. What a brilliant example of why Sauternes should be left to gather nuance and to shed its more exuberant, fattier early years before opening. This is just a masterclass in the layers and complexity that you find in fully mature Yquem; saffron, truffle, pineapple, quince, lime, apricots and lemon. Hugely persistent with a squeeze of scraping slate acidity through the final few minutes that gives a dry but mouthwatering finish. It is clearly in its tertiary phase in terms of the type of aromatics, and the beautiful amber, rose-gold colour, but there is no sense that it is beginning to run out of steam. A concentrated, gloriously balanced Yquem that has decades ahead of it, and fully justifies the reputation of the vintage... (01/2021)

1989 Montrose, St-Estèphe

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Montrose, St-Estèphe (100TWI, 99JD, 99JS, 98VN, 97RP). The Wine Independent: "The 1989 Montrose, from a very warm, dry year, is made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-brick in color (holding its color amazingly!) it sky-rockets from the glass with flamboyant notes of black cherry compote, blueberry pie, and blackcurrant jelly, followed by notes of star anise, peonies, crushed rocks, and tar, plus exotic hints of cardamom and cumin seed. The medium to full-bodied palate is rich, opulent, and well structured, delivering firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness to support the generous, wonderfully pure fruit, finishing long and earthy. This is textbook Montrose. (LPB)" (09/2023)

M. Chapoutier "Le Pavillon" Ermitage
1989 M. Chapoutier "Le Pavillon" Ermitage

Bid on this bottle of 1989 M. Chapoutier "Le Pavillon" Ermitage (100RP, 95VN). Wine Advocate: "The 1989 Le Pavilion is a prodigious wine. Made from yields of 14 hectoliters per hectare, this parcel of old vines (averaging 70-80 years of age) has produced an opaque black/purple-colored wine, with a hauntingly stunning bouquet of violets, cassis, minerals, and new oak. In the mouth, the similarity in texture, richness, and perfect balance to the compelling 1986 Mouton-Rothschild is striking, only this wine is richer and longer. This extraordinarily well-balanced wine will probably not be ready to drink for at least 5-10 years, but it will evolve for three decades or more. It is an enormous yet amazingly well-delineated wine. I lament the fact that there are only 600 cases of this magnificent wine. This great Hermitage was the first of a trilogy (1989, 1990, and 1991) of exquisite Le Pavillons." (01/1997)

While the bouquet is unforthcoming, the wine is loaded with a steely acidity, massive richness, and possesses a mind-blowing finish. It tastes like eau de vie of buttered apples and liquid popcorn. Drink it between 1996-2010. This is an outstanding white burgundy by any standard of measurement. Don't miss it! (RP)" (02/1992)

More elegant palate than the 1990, it has a very fine stream of red fruit and spiced cherries and a central, linear focus. The flavors hold so very long, deeply concentrated and focused. Mainly savoury aromas of toasted nut, marmite, and white truffles over lemon tart, butterscotch, creme brulee and chalk boards. There is density, balance, a haunting combination of minerals and ripe fruit, and a finish that exceeds 60 seconds. Interestingly, it is more developed and softer than the Chevalier-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. Deep, concentrated, ultra-pure and with building tannin, it's a killer, fully mature Cote Rotie that will continue to knock your socks off over the coming decade or more. (JD)" (09/2015)

Wine Advocate: "Both the 1989 and 1990 vintages exhibit opaque, dense purple colors that suggest massive wines of considerable extraction and richness. The dense, full-bodied 1989 is brilliantly made with huge, smoky, chocolatey, cassis aromas intermingled with scents of toasty oak. Well-layered, with a sweet inner-core of fruit, this awesomely endowed, backward, tannic, prodigious 1989 needs another 5-6 years of cellaring; it should last for three decades or more. Wine Advocate: "... 1989, the 200th anniversary of the French revolution, was an incredibly hot year (surpassed only by 1990 and 2003). Even from barrel the seamless 1989 La Mission revealed a special elixir aspect, tasting like it had been designed by Chanel. It still possesses a blue/purple color with only a hint of garnet creeping in, and the explosive aromatics offer up notes of licorice, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, smoky barbecue meats, truffles and graphite... Full-bodied with extraordinary opulence as well as sweet, well-integrated, velvety tannins, this fresh, lively, blockbuster La Mission appears to be one of those rare wines that never goes through a closed, unfriendly stage. Palmer, Margaux

97IWR

97VN

The 1989 growing season was warm in Margaux, leading to one of the earliest vintages of the century for Château Palmer, with the end result being a wine of exceptional quality. The 1989 Château Palmer is a simply magical wine, which clearly depicts the pedigree of this grand Château and the quality that can be achieved in a historic vintage like ’89. Today, this magnificent blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc offers striking aromas of black cherries, cassis, sweet pipe tobacco, roasted coffee, tar and spring florals, which are just about impossible to resist. It still shows plenty of weight on the palate, with a seamless, velvety texture and remarkable balance as it expands beautifully on to the supple finish where it leaves behind sweet fruits, tobacco and espresso notes. Today, after 25 years, this is a complete knockout and still looks to have some wonderful years ahead. (JD)

It becomes yet more complex on the palate thanks to layers upon layers of spices and sage plus fat and rounded tannins. There's a long finish with a bitter aftertaste, suggesting this could do with another 10 years or more of bottle aging. This has a life-affirming symmetry and a peacock's tail on the finish that leaves you struck with awe. (NM)" (07/2024)

Bid on this bottle of 1989 DRC Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru (94BH, 94JG, 94WS). Wine Spectator: "The immediate impression is one of a fresh, sumptuous nose of cherry and currants. Tight, firm and closed, this has an edge today, along with a velvety texture. Patience is required here. More textural than the 1980. (BS)" (06/2006)

Penfolds "Grange" Shiraz South Australia
1989 Penfolds "Grange" Shiraz South Australia

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1989 Penfolds "Grange" Shiraz South Australia (99JA, 96TWI, 96WS). Jane Anson: "You might expect a vintage of this age to look more evolved than this, particularly one that is not recognised as a great Grange vintage, and yet it is vibrant and ready for action. 1989 was a very hot year, fully ripe, and it retains an edge of rubber and smoke reduction on the opening notes, needs a good carafe to really open up... Once it does, you get straight to cigar box, cinders, soot, blueberries, blackcurrant, raspberry puree, still stunning, with the spice of a hot year. Changed from Grange Hermitage in this year (in the following 1990 vintage, the cork says Grange Hermitage, while the label just says Grange). Peter Gago arrived in this vintage, at a time when the team was still working in a traditional manner, with a continous press used for extraction - a rougher method than today, and yet this is still firing on all cylinders, and is just a fabulous wine." Gaja "Sperss" Barolo (375ml)
1989 Gaja "Sperss" Barolo (375ml)

Bid on this 1-half-bottle lot of 1989 Gaja Sperss Barolo (375ml) (97RP, 96WS). Wine Advocate: The 1989 Barolo Sperss is wonderfully complete and polished, as layers of seamless, ripe fruit emerge from its powerful frame with tons of class. The wine reveals stunning elegance and purity wrapped around a powerful core of Serralunga fruit that speaks volumes of the greatness of this terroir. The 1989 Sperss can be enjoyed today as the tannins are incredibly finessed, but it also looks to have many years of profound drinking ahead of it. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. (AG) (02/2010)

Bid on this magnum of 1989 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (1.5L) (91RP). Wine Advocate: "The 1989 reveals sweet Christmas fruitcake, black currant, licorice, damp earth and forest floor notes in its well-built, medium-bodied, elegant personality. With excellent color as well as fruit concentration, this is another vintage that has aged better than I would have expected. (RP)" (11/2013)

Stacked up against the La Mission 1989, tasted alongisde, the Haut-Brion has more immediate punch, still swinging at the very top of its game, and where La Mission has a softer welcome, showing pure pleasure and finesse, the Haut-Brion remains muscular and dense, even a little closed still on first opening, almost impossible to believe at 35 years. A stunning wine, with spiced depths to the damson, roasted plum and cassis fruits. Expect saffron, tobacco and smoked earth notes, with cigar box, rose petal and liqourice aromatics. The texture remains muscular - more so than last time I drank it, but that was from a home cellar and this is ex-château - and it proves one more time that it deserves to be in the pantheon of 20th century wines. Jean-Bernard Delmas estate director, Jean-Philippe Masclef winemaker.

Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (99RP, 96JD, 96VN, 96WS, 94JS). Wine Advocate: "One of the all-time great vintages for this château is the 1989 Lynch-Bages, a striking wine that offers up pure and intense aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, spring flowers and hints of cigar wrapper. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's seamless and concentrated, with a rich core of fruit, ripe tannins and a beautifully defined finish. Still an infant at age 32, it surpasses all three of Pauillac's first growths in 1989. (WK)" (02/2022)

Mortlach 35 Year Old "Artist #15 - The Dark Side Of The Moon" La Maison Du Whisky Hand Selected Single 2nd Fill Sherry Butt Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
1989 Mortlach 35 Year Old "Artist #15 - The Dark Side Of The Moon" La Maison Du Whisky Hand Selected Single 2nd Fill Sherry Butt Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

******SPECIAL ORDER SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY - NEW YORK ARRIVAL IN 5-7 BUSINESS DAYS. NO REFUNDS OR RETURNS******* The oldest whisky in La Maison du Whisky's Artist #15 The Dark Side of the Moon collection, this 1989 Mortlach was bottled in 2025 from second-fill sherry butt #S-28607. Aged for 36 years and released under the Over 35 Years designation, it represents the collection's earliest vintage. Just 250 bottles were drawn at a natural cask strength of 44.2% ABV. Founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Mortlach is Dufftown's oldest distillery and one of Speyside's most distinctive producers. Its complex partial triple distillation, famously described as 2.81 times, works in conjunction with traditional worm-tub condensers to create the substantial spirit for which the distillery is known. This release brings that distinctive production method together with more than three decades in a second-fill sherry butt. The Dark Side of the Moon collection explores sherry maturation through six individual casks, accompanied by the work of South African artist Sthenjwa Luthuli. His Untitled composition appears here, reflecting a practice rooted in Zulu culture and expressed through meticulously hand-carved, polished and painted wooden panels.
