Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
1983 Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Bid on this bottle of 1983 Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1900, when Georges de Latour decided to buy a small, four-acre property in the town of Rutherford as a surprise for his wife he, perhaps unwittingly, purchased a piece of Napa Valley history. The land would become the foundation for Beaulieu Vineyard, which survived Prohibition by having one of a handful of contracts to supply churches with sacramental wine. After Prohibition the winery continued to thrive, experimenting with varietals, blends and aging. Under the direction of André Tchelistcheff, the winery fast became one of California's preeminent producers.

1983 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1983 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti Grand Cru (92RP). Wine Advocate: "This is a sensational wine with a rich yet youthful fragrance, long, deep flavor, and plenty of body. The 1983 vintage for Domaine de la Romanee-Conti was a very tough year. First there was hail, then the advent of rot in August thanks to the tropical heat and humidity. When the harvest occurred, the domaine instructed its pickers to pick the grapes, not the grape bunches, by hand and to discard all of the rotten grapes. The results are splendidly concentrated, rich wines, but wines that are extremely expensive and need at least a decade of cellaring." (01/1990)

DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru
1983 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1983 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru (94VN, 92RP). Vinous: "The 1983 La Tâche Grand Cru from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is a vintage that to my knowledge, I have never encountered before. The growing season does not boast a top reputation, with many growers suffering rain-induced rot. It split commentators upon release and does to this day. This bottle contradicts some dismissive reviews that I have read elsewhere. Melted red plum, burning embers, hints of dried blood and black truffle unfold on the nose that develops more floral nuances with aeration. The palate is gentle and refined, well-balanced with pliant tannins, pretty red fruit with subtle sous-bois notes percolating up with time. Maybe it’s damning with faint praise but the sheer drinkability of this La Tâche resulted in the bottle being finished far quicker than intended. Isn’t that what wine is for? (NM)" (07/2022)

DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru
1983 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1983 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru (91BH). Burghound: "Somewhat remarkably given the production level, I hadn't tried this since 1995. Bricked through. A notably ripe and highly expressive nose combines both secondary and tertiary aromas that are liberally laced with spice, floral and soft Asian tea-like aromas. There is still very good density and richness to the medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a solidly complex finish that is not overly '83 like in the sense of being excessively tannic though there is a hint of backend dryness." Bid on this bottle of 1983 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru (90BH, 90RP). Wine Advocate: "The Grands Echezeaux is velvety and forward, and given its quality, a good value for a Domaine de la Romanee-Conti wine. The 1983 vintage for Domaine de la Romanee-Conti was a very tough year. First there was hail, then the advent of rot in August thanks to the tropical heat and humidity. Hanzell Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
1983 Hanzell Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Bid on this bottle of 1983 Hanzell Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. A real unicorn wine! While Hanzell is best known as a pioneer of California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, a parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in a nod to the late Countess Barbara de Brye, who preferred the clarets of Bordeaux, and whose heirs own the estate to this day.

Smoky, floral and fabulous. Violet-edged, this stands out over the 1982 for its complexity of aromatics and flavours. Brambled blackberry notes meld with soft leather and liquorice, all perfectly finessed. Harvest 28 September until 13 October, around one week later than the 1982. A touch of Petit Verdot finishes up the blend. Peter Sichel, who was making the wine at the time, was convinced straight after harvest that the 1982 was better than the 1983. 'He was right,' says Thomas Duroux today. Certainly sugar levels were a touch higher than the previous year, and the fruit character generous from the earliest years. (JA)

Margaux, Margaux
1983 Margaux, Margaux

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1983 Margaux, Margaux (99TWI, 99VN, 98JA, 98JS, 98WS, 97RP). Vinous: "The 1983 Château Margaux is a fantastic wine that heralded the true return of the First Growth. This bottle came directly from the château's cellars. Incredible delineation and focus on the nose, this is just so pure and charming with black fruit, graphite, melted tar, cedar and pressed rose petals. It is close to perfection. The palate offers exquisite balance and finely-sculpted tannins. It's elegant and almost totally disguises its power. It gently fans out towards the finish with utmost poise and sophistication. Stunning. (NM)" (01/2023)
