Reed was a well-established favorite of the panel by this point, consistently the preferred wine for most tasters in many vintages. The ‘85 was showing beautifully with plenty of red forest berries, baking spice, and tobacco. Reaching the milestone of 10 years vine age seemed to be really showing in these mid-80s wines.
Notes
Calera's Reed Vineyard consists of just a little under 4.5 acres that were planted to Pinot Noir in 1975. Formerly forested, these north and northeast facing upper and lower blocks features the deepest and darkest soils with more clay, and thus fruit is slower to ripen. It was named after William (Bill) G. Reed, Sr. one of Calera's original founding partners and close friend to Josh Jenson. Reed Vineyard Pinots are typically exotically perfumed, light in body, with a soft, supple mouthfeel. The cool microclimate makes for wines with naturally fresh acidity and the structure to develop nicely with age.
