Reviewed March 1997Smells terrific, with all kinds of jammy aromas, cherry and raspberry, but on the palate it takes on a racy character, marked by spice and anise notes. Complex and elegant.

With the 1984-planted, own-rooted at vines in the Mills block getting more established by the point this fruit was picked; this wine was singing! My notes said: “Fresh, super aromatic, beautiful expression of Pinot Noir.”
Notes
Situated in the Gavilan Mountains just twenty-five miles east of the Monterey Bay, at an average elevation of 2,200 feet above sea level, Calera's Mount Harlan "Mills Vineyard" is among the highest and coolest sites in California. Calera farms these limestone soils organically, ferments using native yeasts with minimal racking, and bottles unfiltered to produce an intense, structured Pinot Noir with a real sense of place.
