Picked on the 2nd September (Le Charlemagne) and 6th September (En Charlemagne). A fine bright full lemon yellow. The nose is very complete, not especially mineral, but with a fine suggestion of density which materialises on the palate, plus an excellent integrated acidity at the back. Now the stones with their traditional lemon rinse come into play, without forgetting the flesh of the white fruit. Very promising

This majestic white is almost voluptuously ripe, with aromas of ripe pear, fresh hawthorn flowers, butter and a suggestion of spice. The wine is dense and powerful, but there is enough acidity to keep everything in balance. The grapes are from two parcels, one in Le Charlemagne (in Aloxe-Corton) facing south and one in En Charlemagne (in Pernand-Vergelesses) facing west. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters and fermented on native yeasts without sulfur; the wine is ageing now in cask (20% new). (Drink between 2027-2055)

The 2022 Charlemagne Grand Cru has a smoky, bacon fat-tinged nose—clearly some premeditated reduction here, but it is effective and works to its advantage. The palate is fresh on the entry, wild peach mixed with clementine and Anjou pears, caressing in the mouth as it builds in weight to a satisfying, gras-like finish. Good potential. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2027-2045)

Burghound

Review Date: 06/2024
A distinctly cooler nose is comprised by notes of Granny Smith, spice, white flower and plenty of wet stone character. The rich and impressively scaled and concentrated big-bodied flavors exude an almost aggressive minerality on the clean, dry and markedly powerful finish. This beautifully long effort could use better depth but it has so much underlying material that more should almost certainly develop over time. Excellent. (Drink starting 2032)

Notes

Domaine de la Vougeraie was created in 1999 when Jean-Claude Boisset gathered the best vineyards his family had bought over 35 years, starting with Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles in 1964, into a single estate named for the family home in Vougeot. It runs about 40 hectares across more than 30 appellations, farmed biodynamically since 2001 under Sylvie Poillot, who took over the winemaking team when Pierre Vincent left for Domaine Leflaive after 2016. The reputation rests on Côte de Nuits grands crus, which is why the whites deserve a look: they get grand cru care and carry a Côte de Nuits address, so they sit outside the Puligny and Meursault price spiral. The flagship is Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot, a 2.3-hectare walled monopole beside the château that the monks of Cîteaux set aside for white grapes around 1110 and that has never grown anything else. It’s mostly Chardonnay with a little Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, the only premier cru white in Vougeot. Behind it come the village Vougeot Clos du Prieuré blanc from another walled plot at the edge of the village, a Beaune blanc from Montée Rouge and La Maladière, and at the top a Corton-Charlemagne from the Le Charlemagne climat. The whites are pressed whole-cluster and raised in barrel with new wood matched to each plot rather than set by formula.
