Sourced entirely from the estate-owned W.S. Keyes Vineyard at 556 metres elevation, the 2023 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold yet strikingly composed wine. Winemaker Chris Carpenter notes that Howell Mountain is the coldest of Napa’s mountain AVAs, where tannins are typically broad in shape and structure. Texturally, this is a compelling experience on the palate, with palate-etching tannins that carry a fine, pebbly, dusty granularity, framed by blue- and black-fruited depth and an ironstone mineral core. The fruit and structure build steadily towards a sanguine, subtly saline finish, layered again and again with mineral intensity. Fresh bay laurel and mint lift the long, persistent finish, which easily stretches to a full minute.

This year, my top pick of the Lokoya offerings is the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. Sourced from the family's W.S. Keyes Vineyard, this full-bodied, concentrated effort is richly tannic, loaded with notes of crushed stone, pencil shavings, blackberries, black cherries, cassis and plum. Velvety and lingering on the finish, it's mouthwatering and dusty at the same time, one of those crazy paradoxes that mark great wines.

Coming from a single site on Howell Mountain, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is another sensational, pure, heavenly wine from Chris that sports a deep purple hue as well as textbook aromatics of freshly sharpened pencil, crushed stone, liquid violets, and assorted red, black, and blue fruits on the nose. Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in 80% new oak, it's full-bodied, with a deep, rich, layered mouthfeel, lots of ripe tannins, and a stunning finish. It's a mountain wine that needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for 30, 40, if not 50 years. There are 969 cases produced. Drink 2029-2075.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a potent wine packed with blackberry jam, licorice, spice, chocolate and espresso. Like its sibling, the La Jota Cabernet, the Lokoya Cabernet offers a stunning mix of power and finesse. Its Howell Mountain DNA really comes alive with time in the glass. Superb. 97+
