The Lokoya Winery Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced primarily from two estate-owned vineyards: the 10 hectare Yverdon Vineyard, perched at 640 metres, and the 18 hectare Wurtele Vineyard, situated at around 304 metres. Both sites are planted on ancient, ocean-bottom sedimentary soils, which impart a distinctive mineral signature to the wine. Readers familiar with this wine know it is typically profoundly layered and expressive. In 2023, the wine is so fresh, so enticing, and simply seamless, with Chris Carpenter's characteristic off-the-charts intensity. Layers of blue-black fruit unfold alongside lavish notes of tobacco and dark, salted chocolate, with accents of sagebrush, mint, and bay laurel. Despite the extraordinary concentration, the wine feels remarkably fresh, driven by energy rather than weight. Ultra-fine, elongated, polished tannins carry an ironstone and graphite intensity that gives the wine remarkable dimension.

Jeb Dunnuck

Another heavenly wine, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain offers more red, blue, and black fruits, exotic flowers, graphite, and crushed stone, as well as that classic Spring Mountain vibrant and exotic character that defines the appellation. Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in 73% new oak, it's deep and full-bodied on the palate, with ample tannins, integrated acidity, and a gorgeous finish. As with all of these 2023s from Lokoya, it's built for the cellar. Hide bottles for 4-6 years and it could be a 40- or 50-, if not 60+-year wine. There are 935 cases produced. Drink 2030-2075.

Vinous

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain is a classy, elegant wine. It shows all the finesse of Spring Mountain, with a fair amount of tannin. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice and blood orange open with some reluctance. The Spring Mountain Cabernet is usually more sensual and approachable in the early going. The 2023, on the other hand, needs quite a bit of time.

Beautifully rendered, this manages to put forth steeped boysenberry, morello cherry and red currant fruit paste notes that sparkle with inner energy, while anise, bramble, black tea and wood spice details emerge steadily. Sapid, long and seriously grippy, but with freshness and drive, this is set up for a long, slow evolution. Best from 2030 through 2050. 935 cases made.
