A fruity wine with lush aromas of red cherry jam, violets and subtle spices. Light-bodied, crisp, tight and chewy, with balanced tannins. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. (AF)

The Mascheroni Stianti family has owned Castello di Volpaia since 1966. Not just a winery but a medieval hamlet, it is nestled at the region’s highest reaches. Cool heights are evoked by pristine, limpid scents of delicate white blossoms and orange citrus in the 2024. Earthy tones emerge on the palate – but really it is the bright red cherry that comes to the fore. Bouncy acidity accentuates the fresh, clean sensation. A bit of Merlot helps fill this out, making for an almost midweight proposition. Finishes with a pleasing herbal twist. (MM)

A bright ruby color, the 2024 Chianti Classico offers a more refreshing and open style, with notes of pomegranate, fresh red cherry, orange peel, delicate spice, and fresh herbs. Medium-bodied, it is light on its feet, with fine tannins and a clean, savory finish. It’s an easygoing and approachable vintage that emphasizes freshness. Drink 2026-2034. (AF)

The 2024 Chianti Classico is a gorgeous, classically elegant wine from Radda. Chalk, mint and white pepper play off bright red-toned fruit in a slender, nervy Chianti Classico that impresses with its energy, tension and overall persistence. The weightless, translucent style is so appealing. (AG)

Notes

Volpaia’s Chianti Classico comes from the hamlet of the same name in Radda. For 2024, the estate identifies Sangiovese as the principal grape, with a small addition of Merlot, and describes the wine as organic. The vintage sheet records hand harvesting from September into October and 12 months of maturation in large casks. The label depicts the Commenda di Sant’Eufrosino, a 15th-century church whose basement now forms part of Volpaia’s barrel cellars.
