James Suckling

Reviewed June 2023
Complex and deep character with ripe blackberries, raisins, dried roses, dark chocolate, toasted walnuts, dark licorice and wild mushrooms with a little bit of tar. Full-bodied, layered and compact with a broad and velvety tannin structure that lasts long on the palate. Classy, reserved style with hits of sweet tobacco at the end. Needs three to four years to completely come together. (AS)

Dark and intense, the 2017 Taurasi Radici Riserva smolders up with a mesmerizing blend of crushed ashen stones, graphite, lavender and dried wild berries. This enters the palate lean at first, gaining energy through a core of tart citrus and savory spice as tart red fruits saturate the senses. The 2017 leaves the mouth reeling with a web of fine tannins and a twist of sour orange that puckers the cheeks. This is just a baby today, but it has the balance to mature beautifully over time. The nose is tart, spicy and assertive, with aromas of blackberries, pepper and hot iron. On the palate, black cherries bolster the blackberry tartness, before new intrigue comes in the form of a fresh herbaceousness and a coffee bitterness. Acid punches past strong yet silent tannins. — Danielle Callegari (DC)

A pure beam of macerated black raspberry and plum fruit flavors is accompanied by flattering wild herb, ground coffee, smoke and sanguine details. Bright and focused, with firm, well-knit tannins. Drink now through 2032. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,667 cases made, 500 cases imported. (AN)

Notes

Radici Riserva is made entirely from Aglianico grown in the upper part of Mastroberardino's Montemarano vineyard. The southeast-facing site has stony clay and limestone soils. The 2017 spent about 30 months in French barriques and Slavonian casks, followed by at least 40 months in bottle. Wine Advocate describes the 2017 as ripe and strongly marked by oak. Vinous finds firm, fine tannins and a tart citrus current running through the wine.
