Reviewed January 2026
Tarry, with an interplay of dried flowers, fruit concentration and an appealing touch of rust. An extremely refined expression supported by seamlessly integrated tannins that lead to a savory, subtly firm finish of depth and precision. Despite its apparent delicacy, this has energy and underlying structure. A wine of nuance and superb elegance. Somewhat approachable now, but will benefit from at least five years of aging. (JGA)

Crafted from the estate’s oldest vines, with an average age of 90 years, the 2020 Riserva is a surprisingly gracious and accessible example of Lazzarito. Yet there is still plenty of gumption and grip. Animated fragrances of mint blossom, pepper, liquorice and petrichor entice. There is lovely red fruit depth, supported by medicinal herbs and pink peppercorn. Tannins are smooth and finely polished, giving an elegant frame. Mouthcleansing acidity prolongs the perfumed finish. (MM)

Notes

Lazzarito is a named vineyard area in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the communes of Piedmont’s Barolo appellation. Ettore Germano’s 2020 bottling combines that specific origin with the Riserva designation, which requires at least 62 months of aging, including 18 months in wood. As with all Barolo, Nebbiolo is the sole grape variety.
