80% whole bunch vinification with 6 new barrels out of 9. A fine dense purple. Here the nose is less explosive but clearly suggests concentration. With time some dense dark berry fruit and some peonies start to emerge. On the palate the 2022 Echezeaux is really complex with a few little chocolate notes merging with pinpricks of fresh red fruits, with a long fine finish and a fresh acidity to finish.

The rain 'changed the face of the vintage' according to winemaker Michel Mallard. It brought a fresh elegance and pronounced floral notes to this wine. The difference, according to Mallard, is that the wines from 2020 are denser; those from 2022 give pleasure right now. The domaine did two green harvests to concentrate the fruit. There is both concentration and elegance in this Echézeaux. The grapes come from a half-hectare of vines, all in the cool terroir of the Combe d'Orveau. 80% of them were fermented as whole clusters, and the wine is now ageing in cask, six out of nine of which are new. (Drink between 2030-2065)

Here too there is a subtle oak influence to the spiced plum and wonderfully broad array of floral elements, especially violet and rose petal. The lilting and refined middleweight flavors possess outstanding punch while retaining impeccable balanced on the superbly long finish that is supported by dense but fine-grained tannins. This is terrific and is an Ech of finesse. (Drink starting 2034)

The 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru includes 80% whole bunches like the Aux Brûlées but they are much less evident and here the terroir floods through: red berry fruit, potpourri and light loamy aromas. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, finely chiseled tannins, clean and precise with a linear, "cool" finish. This should age very well in bottle and retains a sense of classicism that I appreciate. Tasted twice a month apart with consistent notes. (Drink between 2028-2050)
