The 2019 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is their more traditional Rioja, a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, mostly from Rioja Alta (Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche) at 550 to 700 meters in altitude, but the Garnacha is from different plots in the zone of Tudelilla at a high altitude. They didn't produce Prado Enea in 2017 or 2018, so this is the follow-up of the superb 2016. The bunches were harvested into 200-kilogram boxes, destemmed, put through optical sorting and fermented in small oak casks with indigenous yeasts. The élevage in barrel was extended to 36 months. The nose is phenomenal, keeping the essence of Muga with a touch of Garnacha perfume; it's still young and undeveloped for its age, not yet tertiary. The wine is full-bodied but fine-boned and has 14.7% alcohol, a pH of 3.46 and 5.81 grams per liter acidity. Still young, the wine has power and elegance and very good aging potential. (LG)

One of Rioja’s greatest pan-regional blends, this is a beautifully judged cuvée of Tempranillo, 17% Garnacha Tinta and 3% Mazuelo from Fonzaleche, Haro, Tudelilla, Sajazarra and Villalba de Rioja, making the most of cooler areas in a Mediterranean vintage. Deftly oaked in French and American barrels, it’s a youthful, structured, acid-driven red of great complexity with redcurrant and blackberry flavours, toasty, spicy oak, fine tannins and a lingering finish.

This shows incredible precision and classical Rioja character, with irresistible layers of incense, baking spices, cigar box, and rooty tones framing elegantly ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit. Fine tannins come through on the long finish, while leather and soy sauce hints put the icing on the cake. Already stunning. (JS)

Since the 2016 vintage, and with no wine made in 2017 or 2018, the 2019 Prado Enea Gran Reserva marks the first release, blending Tempranillo with Garnacha and Graciano from high-elevation vineyards in the western reaches of Rioja Alta. Up to 31 months in cask followed, with 80% French oak and 20% American. Layered aromatics of blackberry, plum and elderberry are framed by delicate herbal tones, cedar and a hint of coconut from the élevage. As it opens, the bouquet gains complexity and reveals subtle spice and sweet oak nuances. On the palate, notable energy and clarity of fruit are supported by fine-grained tannins and a juicy core that carries the flavors effortlessly through the finish. Gentle notes of coconut and caramel linger in the background, adding depth without overshadowing the fruit. Structured yet vibrant, this vintage captures the classical balance of Prado Enea, power moderated by freshness and length. Beautifully composed, this Rioja should age gracefully for decades. (JH)

Only made in exceptional vintages, Prado Enea is the flagship wine of iconic winery Muga, and more importantly, one of the great wines of Rioja. This is the first vintage released since 2016, and it proves that it was well worth the wait! The 2019 vintage was warm and dry, with nearly perfect growing conditions and slightly lower yields than average. The resulting wine is classic Prado Enea through and through, balancing typical Muga power and intensity with an incredible amount of finesse on the palate. Aged in both American and French oak barrels, the wine is framed by toasty hazelnut and saddle leather notes, as well as well-integrated tannins. This is a style of rich and savory Gran Reserva Rioja that just seems to get more complex with every swirl in the glass. Dried thyme and oregano are followed by tea leaves and portobello mushroom, which are followed by graphite and dried red plum. It’s hard to put the glass down! Slowly savor this Rioja along with a great meal and conversation. Personally, I’d suggest picking up a few bottles – one to enjoy now and the others to open down the road, because it will be fascinating to see how this develops and gains even more complexity as the years pass.

Notes

Founded in 1932 in Haro, at the heart of Rioja Alta, Bodegas Muga is one of Rioja’s most respected family-run wineries and one of the region’s great champions of traditional winemaking. Still based in the historic Barrio de la Estación, Muga combines old-school Rioja élevage with an unusually meticulous approach to cellar work, including fermentation and aging in oak and the use of traditional large wooden vats. The estate farms vineyards across some of Rioja’s finest sites, with an emphasis on altitude, freshness and long-term ageability. At the top of the range is Prado Enea Gran Reserva, produced only in exceptional vintages, while Torre Muga represents a more powerful, modern expression of Rioja, typically centered on Tempranillo from older vines and given extended aging in French oak. Also of note is the, Reserva Selección Especial, made only in outstanding vintages from carefully selected fruit and designed for long-term cellaring. Together, these wines showcase the remarkable breadth of Rioja while demonstrating Muga’s ability to balance tradition, precision and serious aging potential.
