Grapefruit, saline, very citrus-driven with a stony austerity. It combines expressive fruit with saline acidity balanced by a touch of texture. From estate-owned vineyards in Condado de Tea. Fermented and aged in tank. A straightforward albariño with a touch of generosity. (JGA)

A burst of juicy nectarine is laced with flattering hints of lime pith, chalk, verbena, fresh tarragon and pickled ginger in this vivid white, underscored by a racy streak of salinity. *Best Value* (AN)

Albariño from Rías Baixas is, without a doubt, some of the most reliably delicious white wine being produced in Spain today. These wines are so fresh and clean, truly evocative of the cool Atlantic breezes that sweep across the region. The 2025 Bodegas La Val Albariño is another great example in a long line of crisp, coastal Albariños I’ve had the pleasure of tasting recently. Founded in 1985, La Val helped establish the Rías Baixas appellation and has built its reputation on estate-grown Albariño from the region’s distinctive vineyards. A blend of fruit from high-elevation, granite-rich vineyards and lower-lying, clay-and-pebble soils, this bottling balances bright, mouthwatering freshness with generous orchard and stone fruit. It’s saline and delicately fruit-forward on the nose, with notes of nectarine, lemon blossom and grapefruit zest, followed by that classic crunchy oyster shell minerality on the palate. Bone-dry and framed by racy acidity, it’s perfect for pairing with shellfish and seafood, but just as delicious for casual sipping. If you’re a fan of steely Sauvignon Blanc or Chenin Blanc, I’d highly recommend giving this wine a try. It’s classic Rías Baixas: snappy, mouthwatering and refreshing, and an absolute bargain at the price.

Notes

Founded in 1985, Bodegas La Val is one of the pioneering estates of Rías Baixas, helping establish Albariño as one of Spain’s great white wine varieties and playing an instrumental role in the creation of the appellation in 1988. Originally based in O Rosal, near the mouth of the Miño River, the winery moved to its current home at Finca Arantei in Salvaterra de Miño, in the Condado do Tea subzone, in 2003. Today, La Val farms more than 90 hectares of estate vineyards across Condado do Tea and O Rosal, giving the team an impressive range of sites and soil types from which to craft expressive, terroir-driven Albariño. The winery’s commitment to estate-grown fruit and vineyard-focused winemaking has helped establish it as a respected name in the region, producing wines that balance Galicia’s Atlantic freshness with generous aromatics and a distinct sense of place. Since joining the historic CVNE family in 2023, La Val has continued its focus on quality and regional character, bringing the group’s deep Spanish winemaking experience to one of the country’s most exciting white wine regions.
