Reviewed November 2022Notes
The Rozès family’s Domaine d’Aurensan takes an unusually complete approach to expressing its corner of Ténarèze, aging its Armagnacs in barrels fashioned from oak grown on the estate itself. Its five hectares of vineyards sit on chalky clay soils, with vineyard work and harvesting performed by hand. Grapes are picked at full maturity and vinified without added yeast or sulfur before continuous distillation in a small traditional Armagnac still. This 1990 vintage was produced entirely from Ugni Blanc and matured for 32 years in a single 420-liter Gascon oak cask before being bottled and packaged by hand at the domaine in 2022. Aurensan’s Triple Zero philosophy means no added water, sugar, or coloring, allowing decades of maturation as the only influence on the spirits final character. Bottled unfiltered at its natural cask strength of 40.7% ABV, this is a remarkably transparent expression of mature, estate-produced Armagnac, connecting the family’s vineyards, oak trees, and cellar in a single bottle.
