Even better than the 2022 release - and that’s saying a good deal - this is a superb iteration of luxury group LVMH’s iconic Argentinian red. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with support from 40% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot, it’s dominated by fruit from Las Compuertas, with 20% from cooler Paraje Altamira. Matured in 50% new French oak, it’ a wine that’s approachable young but will reward patience, with sculpted tannins, seamless layers of cassis, bramble and green herbs, a touch of cigar box and a fine, tapering finish. World class,

Deliciously dark fruit, concentrated and powerful but with the lightest of touches through the palate. There is creamy blackberry and cassis, leafy, red roses, pulses of air and lift.

As finely made as the 2021, the 2023 is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot from a massal selection taken from Bordeaux. Barrel-fermented and aged, it’s gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, exceptionally well-made and precise in its grasp of rich mouthfeel, incredible structure, and intoxicating aromatics of cedarwood, tobacco, and wildflowers. The full-bodied concentration is supple and seamless, with layers of inky blue and black fruit as well as cacao nib lending a subtle richness complemented by graphite and dried herb. (VB)

This vintage shows good precision as it zeroes in on balance and complexity with a Bordeaux-like sensibilty. Excellent complexity on the nose, showing currants, paprika, cedary blackberries, tobacco, grilled herbs and touches of cocoa powder and roasted sweet spices. Round and more effortless this year, with a positively fluid, precise mouth-feel, Medium body round off by silky, sweet tannins. Lightly creamy at the end but really integrated and elegant, with a long, supple finish. A blend of 57% cabernet sauvignon, 40% malbec and 3% petit verdot. Already approachable, but can hold for a decade, if not more. (ZS)

Notes

Established in 1999, Cheval des Andes is a collaboration between Argentina’s Terrazas de los Andes and the legendary Château Cheval Blanc of Saint-Émilion. The estate serves as a living bridge to viticultural history, utilizing ungrafted Malbec vines planted in Mendoza’s high-altitude vineyards long before the phylloxera epidemic devastated Europe’s original rootstocks. By marrying the rigorous blending traditions of Bordeaux with the expressive, high-altitude terroir of the Andes, the estate produces a unique blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and occasionally Petit Verdot that captures the best of both the Old and New Worlds. Alongside its impeccable pedigree, Cheval des Andes also has exceptional aging potential. As the South American "Grand Cru" project of Cheval Blanc, it benefits from the same technical precision and philosophical approach to elegance found in Cheval Blanc. The 2022 vintage allowed for a remarkably slow ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, which takes a more prominent role in the blend this year alongside the old-vine Malbec. The result is a wine of extraordinary tension and aromatic purity, characterized by a svelte, streamlined texture and silky tannins. With its vibrant acidity and serious concentration, the 2022 is noted for being one of the most elegant and precise releases in the estate’s history, offering a bright, energetic profile that is built to age gracefully over the years to come.
