Equipped with an artist's label, the intensely yellow-colored 2021 Grüner Veltliner Ried Spiegel 1ÖTW Vincent (Edition Rudolf Polanszky) opens with a rich yet pure and elegant bouquet of buttercups and a sea of salts spiced with herbs. This sunny but high-elevation and late-ripening cru was picked at the end of October and promises a very fine and complex wine. The palate is rich and elegant yet also weightless, seamless, though full-bodied and tight as well as saline and tannic on the finish. This is warming but also pure, saline, finessed and tensioned Veltliner was aged in oak, and its almost weightless complexity and aging potential is that of a Burgundy cru. However, the wine is too tight and herbal and, later on, too charming and too fruity to be mistaken for a Burgundy, but in terms of structure, finesse and mouthfeel, we are quite near. This Spiegel has this kind of mystery that makes us ask: Will it ever deliver, in 10 or 20 years? Stone me if he can't do it. This is an impressive, unique and un-Austrian style of Grüner Veltliner that will make its way. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.(SR)

This is a full-bodied gruner that displays intense notes of baked mangoes, spices and buttered toast. Compact and ripe, with opulent spiciness and a firm, phenolic texture. Long and concentrated. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (CN)

Vinous

Review Date: 02/2024
The 2021 Grüner Veltliner Ried Spiegel Vincent is from a relatively flat, south-facing site on loess, very well ventilated, from almost 65-year-old vines. It was made in 300-liter barrels and stayed on gross lees until the following summer. Hazelnut, smoke and honey speak of oak influence, and a touch of caramel follows. The palate, however, is superbly fresh and bright, nicely framing that ripeness and generosity of nose. Smoothness defines the mid-palate, with concentrated but somehow languid creaminess—long, smooth, cool and rounded but oh-so-fresh. (Bone-dry)(AK)

There is a nice mouth-coating note of wet stone enveloping this silky, vibrant white, which is all about texture. It showcases nectarine, apple and lemon fruit underscored by a subtle salinity. It shows intensity from start to finish, ending in a long, citrusy and stony aftertaste. (AZ)

Notes

Based in Langenlois, Bründlmayer is closely associated with Austria’s Kamptal, the Lower Austrian wine region named for the Kamp River. The 2021 “Vincent’s Spiegel” is a Grüner Veltliner from this area, where Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the two defining grapes of the Kamptal DAC appellation. 97 points Falstaff (tasted July 2023): Bright golden yellow, silver reflections. Fine tropical fruit, delicate meadow herbs, some honey blossom, melon and clementines, with fine savouriness underneath. Juicy, good complexity, salty, pronounced in fruit, mango, multifaceted acid structure, remains long lasting, multi-layered food companion, certain ageing potential. (PM)
