Ripe blackcurrants, darker cherries, chocolate, baking spices, and new leather-like aromatics all define the 2021 Capella, a deep, full-bodied, absolutely majestic red that has a stunning mid-palate, a broad, layered mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a great finish. As I commented last year, there’s a First Growth Pauillac-like style here, and this deserves 4-6 years of bottle age and will evolve gracefully over the following 2-3 decades. Don’t miss it.

This is slow-moving but suave, with a seemingly ceaseless wave of warmed cassis, plum compote and blackberry reduction notes that are laced with singed alder, bay leaf, chestnut and walnut husk accents. Offers a loamy tug through the finish, with the fruit easily keeping pace with this red’s more brooding, earthy side. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2028 through 2045. 272 cases made.

The 2021 Cappella Proprietary Red, from a vineyard on the western side of Saint Helena, features hints of crushed stone and pencil shavings layered atop notes of blueberries and black cherries. It's full-bodied and structured, with dusty tannins on the mid-palate that seem to grow more supple on the long, mouthwatering finish.

Vinous
The 2021 Cappella is a pretty, very delicate wine. Floral and vibrant, this mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon is super-expressive right out of the gate. Rose petal, lavender, orange peel, spice and menthol gradually open with coaxing. There's a bit of firmness that needs time to soften. Otherwise, this should drink well right out of the gate. It opens beautifully with a bit of aeration.
