This is the essence of Le Pin with incredible silk texture and beautiful fruit. A berry, sweet-tobacco, chocolate and dusty undertone. It reminds me of many wonderful and underrated Le Pins of the 1980s like 1985 or 1986. What a wine. Better in 2018. But who can wait? Cystal clear. It’s like the 2001 that was always better than 2000.

The Wine Palate

Review Date: 08/2026
Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2012 Le Pin rolls out with beautiful notions of roses, baked plums, and raspberry preserves, plus hints of wild sage, cedar, and red loam with a ferrous waft. The medium-bodied palate is wonderfully elegant and intense, with firm, rounded tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and so, so minerally. (LPB)

A beautiful wine, showing slate, crushed rock and pulses of minerality against the silky satiny texture that is signature of Le Pin and the classic brushed velvet tannins of Pomerol. Succulent, limbering up towards its drinking window but will power ahead for another few years. 32hl/h yield.

The 2012 Le Pin has a wonderfully open and expressive character on the nose, being scented with white freesia, tobacco leaf and cigar box, but there are also some fresher and more herby threads suggestive of green tea leaves, garden mint, sun-dried sage and menthol. This is really bright and charming, with a lovely understated confidence on the palate, and a fine midpalate presence. This shows a more minerally backbone and a more stringent bite to the structure than the softer elements seen on the nose suggest;indeed, it has serious grip, evocative style and fine length. Top work.

Notes

Château Le Pin’s rise is one of Pomerol’s most improbable success stories. Founded in 1979 when Jacques Thienpont purchased a modest one-hectare plot long owned by the Loubie family, the estate began with a single stainless-steel vat and production measured in mere barrels. Today the vineyard spans roughly 2.7 hectares of sandy-gravel soils over limestone, planted almost entirely to Merlot, yielding only 600–700 cases in most vintages. A new gravity-flow winery debuted in 2011, refining its already meticulous micro-production. Early acclaim—especially Parker’s praise for the 1982—catapulted Le Pin into the top tier of global fine wine, where rarity, precision, and site expression define its enduring cult status. 95 points, Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "A compelling, totally arresting wine, the 2012 Le Pin boasts superb texture, unctuousness and pure voluptuous beauty. The 2012 is effortless in the way it opens up in the glass, with generous sweet red cherry, plum, iron, smoke and licorice. Perhaps not as rich as some previous vintages, the 2012 is nevertheless racy and quite expressive, even at this early stage." (7/2015)
