We've never welcomed a Barbera to our Best In Show selection before – and pow! Here it is. Fittingly it's a Nizza wine, this DOCG having come into being in 2014 to showcase a Barbera-only subzone formerly included in DOCG Barbera d'Asti Superiore and centred around the town of Nizza Monferrato. It's not a shy wine, and it left our judges excited: powerful black fruits with orange and blueberry scents layered into spicy, creamy oak. On the palate it's rich, deep and heady, with more orange and black fruit partnered with voluptuous tannins from both skins and oak. It has all the athleticism of the variety – but if you're one of those who have found Barbera's acidity to be almost too aggressive and attacking in the past, this wine may reassure; it's balanced and vivacious here, thanks to the overall richness and wealth of the whole.

The 97-point "Best in Show" distinction at the Decanter World Wine Awards is not just another shiny badge; it is a validation of the Nizza DOCG's site potential. For Barbera to capture this honor—the first time a Barbera has ever achieved "Best in Show" status—is a tectonic shift in how the trade views the variety. It proves that the saline snap of the Nizza subzone, helps wine stand toe-to-toe with the most prestigious crus in Piedmont. To be placed in the "Top 6" Italian wines of the year in such a competitive, global tasting isn't an accident of climate; it’s a victory for technical precision. The judges didn't reward it for being "big" or "opulent." They rewarded it for its athleticism—that rare ability to balance concentrated black fruit with a vertical spine of acidity that holds the wine together under pressure. It signals to the market that Pomorosso is no longer just a regional reference point; it is a structural benchmark that proves Nizza’s ability to produce unmanipulated, age-worthy wine even in the face of warming vintages. Maybe one the most interstesting buy of the year. With us directly from the winery.

Notes

Pomorosso has been part of Coppo’s range since 1984, taking its name from a red apple tree that stood above the original vineyard. This 2022 is a Nizza DOCG made entirely from Barbera. Coppo sources the cuvée from Agliano Terme, Castelnuovo Calcea and Nizza Monferrato, on calcareous clay and marl. The producer’s specification describes hand selection of the grapes, gentle pumping over during maceration and fourteen months in oak. Coppo also records a Decanter World Wine Awards Best in Show distinction for the 2022 vintage.
