Black pepper spice, smoky oak and forest berry fruits scent the glass. There is excellent vinosity, but the structure was sticking out a bit when I tasted this. Cyrielle tends to harvest this early in the day, meaning the fruit from this chilly Cru comes in cooler temperature-wise, too. The exuberant freshness just needs more time to integrate into the supple fruit core.

Decanter

This wine strikes an elegant impression with its expressive blackberry fruit and pronounced floral notes on the initial attack. On the palate, there is abundant minerality and plenty of fresh acidity. The texture will strike some as a bit on the light side, but the finish demonstrates a keen balance and admirable finesse. Rousseau owns two parcels totaling 0.76 hectares. The soil is thin, with alluvial material from the combe; near the top of the slope there is a base of Prémeaux limestone, and thicker clay soils near the bottom.(CC)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has another impressive bouquet from this flight with bolder yet delineated and vivacious red fruit that leaps from the glass. Real energy and focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe pliant tannins that frame the mineral-driven red fruit. Plenty of vigour and tension throughout this Gevrey-Chambertin; it feels detailed and sapid on the finish, urging you back for more. I was lukewarm about this from barrel and, as I suspected and wrote back then, it has gained weight and warrants a higher score. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.(NM)

Burghound

Note: from a .76 ha parcel. A spicier if more restrained and exceptionally cool nose grudgingly gives up its aromas of red and dark currant, the sauvage, newly turned earth and humus. The markedly denser and more powerful bigger-bodied flavors flash excellent minerality on the beautifully long and chiseled finale. This could use better depth, but the Rousseau LSJ has a fine aging track record.*Burghound Outstanding!*
