After tasting the Petaluma Gap chardonnay and the Anderson Valley pinot noir, this (also) brand-new cabernet was my last stop for the day. With the other two being outstanding, especially for the $, I had high expectations for this one. This one was quite the change! The other two leaned more into brightness and acidity. This lil monster looked very deep and brooding in the glass. It almost looked unfiltered. I'm not sure if it is but, it kind of appears that way. For me, that is a very good thing. After letting it breathe, out came the black currant, tobacco, cedar and chocolate cherry scents. In the mouth, quite formidable with mouth-coating fruit of more currants, dusty red cherries, earth, clean wood and milk chocolate. Initially the finish starts smoothly, gathers speed and become tart with the clean (and fresh) wood dominating. A very, very light bit of smooth chalk also comes into play, if there is such a thing. Like the other two Anonymous wines that I tried today, this one is a bargain, and it will certainly age for quite a few more years.

Notes

A very exciting addition to our Anonymous Wine Collective lineup, and our first-ever bottling from the tiny Diamond Mountain District AVA. This incredible, powerful, mountain-grown Cabernet comes from a single estate vineyard perched high on the slopes of Diamond Mountain. The vines sit at over 2,000 feet elevation, rooted in extremely rocky, free-draining volcanic soils that give the wine remarkable intensity and structure. This historic site was first planted to grapes in the late 1800s, while the current vines date to the early 1990s. These mature vines bring tremendous character, depth, and complexity to the finished wine. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to select a few barrels for our Anonymous program from a winery I have the utmost respect for and whose wines I have admired for many years. The wine matured for 18 months in 65% new French oak, adding polish and refinement while gently taming those serious mountain tannins. The quality and value this wine represents is exactly why the Anonymous Wine Collective was created. Enjoy!
