James Suckling

Reviewed November 2024
Rather unique terra-cotta, flint and dried strawberries with orange-peel aromas, not to mention flowers, follow through to a medium body with seamless tannins that are rather endless. Spicy like white pepper. It’s so refined and polished, subtle and intense at the same time. From one of the best single vineyards in New Zealand. From organically grown grapes. This is a joy to taste but will be better in three or four years.

Notes

Fromm is one of Marlborough's great Pinot Noir outliers. In a region mostly known for Sauvignon Blanc, Fromm has instead made their mark with Pinot Noir, made in a style unique to the region, balancing exuberant fruit with savory complexity. Since its founding in 1992, the winery has also taken a distinctly European approach to the variety, emphasizing organic viticulture, low yields, site expression and wines built for aging rather than immediate drinking and youthful fruit. The Fromm Pinot Noir offers a savory, structured expression of the winery's home vineyard; Clayvin comes from one of Marlborough's most celebrated hillside sites, where clay soils give the wine unusual depth, texture and earthy complexity; and The Curation, a selection from the estate's finest vineyard sites and barrels, is the pinnacle of Fromm's house style. All three demonstrate just how different Marlborough Pinot Noir can be when the emphasis shifts from aromatic intensity and easy fruit to structure, elegance, minerality, savory intensity and surprising complexity.
