Rose, mint and a whiff of forest floor accent primary aromas of ripe red berry on the gorgeous 2021 Capalot from rising star Cristian Boffa. Made with grapes grown in the Capalot MGA in La Morra, the elegant, vibrant palate delivers ripe raspberry, succulent red cherry, cinnamon stick and licorice accompanied by taut, refined tannins. Bright acidity keeps it well balanced and loaded with energy. (KO)

The 2021 Barolo Capalot is terrific. Ample and explosive, with tons of textural depth, the 2021 possesses notable persistence from start to finish. Heady dark red/plum fruit, leather, incense, tobacco and pomegranate infuse the 2021 with tremendous concentration. The Capalot can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it also has the sheer depth to drink well for a number of years. (AG)

This is the wine that made us pick up the phone. From a great, classically structured vintage, the 2021 Capalot has the depth and grip of serious La Morra Barolo, with layers of dark red fruit, leather, incense, and tobacco that unfold slowly in the glass. Galloni called it "ample and explosive," and he's right, but what stays with you is the length. It drinks well now with an hour in a decanter and will reward a decade in the cellar. At this price, single-vineyard Barolo from a named cru with a 94 from Vinous is close to unheard of.

Notes

Capalot gives Cristian Boffa’s Barolo a precise address in La Morra. The 2021 comes from Nebbiolo on an east-facing site with marl, clay and limestone soils. This is a separate vineyard bottling from a family whose holdings in and around Santa Maria have passed through the generations. Cristian’s maternal grandfather, Giacomo Alessandria, farmed the family’s vineyards, while his father, Stefano, worked for Luigi Oddero for more than four decades. Cristian also trained there before the family committed its production to the Cristian Boffa label in 2012. Capalot brings that local history together in a Barolo centered on one of the family’s inherited La Morra sites.
