The 2024 Ferran Blanc is another terrific example of why I believe Bordeaux remains one of the most exciting places to look for exceptional white wine values. Pessac-Léognan is home to some of the world's finest dry whites, but you don't have to spend a fortune to experience the character and complexity that make these wines so compelling.
Ferran is a historic property, once owned by the philosopher Montesquieu, with a relatively small production of white wine built around Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The 2024 vintage is particularly well suited to this style, delivering the freshness, precision, and aromatic intensity that make the best dry whites of Bordeaux so appealing.
The wine opens with citrus zest, grapefruit, and white flowers, with subtle hints of herbs and mineral character. On the palate, there's a lovely combination of texture and energy, with the richness of the fruit balanced by bright acidity and a fine, almost saline quality that carries through the finish. There's enough substance to give this wine real presence, but it's the freshness, balance, and length that I find most impressive.
This is exactly the kind of under-the-radar Bordeaux discovery I love sharing, a beautifully composed Pessac-Léognan Blanc that delivers far more sophistication than its modest price might suggest.
Notes
Created in 1987, the Pessac-Léognan appellation occupies the northern part of Bordeaux’s historic Graves district and encompasses both red and dry white wines. Ferran Blanc 2024 is a Sauvignon Blanc from this distinctive Bordeaux appellation, where the variety is authorized for white-wine production.
