Fragrant blue flower, fine tobacco blend, plum and eucalyptus are some of the beguiling aromas you’ll find on the compelling Franco Pacenti 2021 Brunello. The palate is equally captivating and utterly delicious, delivering spiced plum, succulent Marasca cherry, star anise and cake spice before closing on a spiced orange zest note. Tightly-knit, velvety tannins provide support while fresh acidity lends great energy. (KO)

A restrained and elegantly spicy wine with aromas of Earl Grey tea, potpourri, red cherries, red currants and stony minerality. Graceful on the palate, with ripe, velvety tannins, crisp and juicy integrated acidity, a full body and a long, savory finish. (JS)

Classic to the core, the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino mixes crushed black cherries and strawberries with dusty roses, violets and a cascade of autumnal spice to form its gorgeous bouquet. It displays textures of pure silk and polished red berry fruits, all perfectly supported by cooling acidity. A web of fine tannins frames the finish as hints of clove and tart woodland berries fade. The 2021 is remarkably pretty and refined and balanced for the cellar. (EG)

Pouring a transparent red hue with orange-tinged edges, the 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino is bright and lifted on the nose, with orange zest, cranberries, cinnamon, minty herbs, and toasted clove. The palate is medium-bodied and linear, with bright acidity, dusty tannins, and mouthwatering notes of citrus, dusty cedar, and refreshing salinity that linger through the finish. It’s a beautifully tension-driven Brunello that should continue to improve with time in bottle. (AF)

Notes

Franco Pacenti’s Canalicchio vineyards lie on Montalcino’s northeastern side, at about 300 meters on soils with a substantial clay component. For 2021, the estate delayed pruning until late March to postpone budbreak; its vintage report records that the still-closed buds escaped the April frost. Franco Pacenti first produced Brunello in 1966. The 2021 fermented in stainless steel with extended skin contact, then spent 26 months in large French and Slavonian oak casks of 25 and 50 hectoliters, followed by seven months in bottle. Pacenti suggests roast red meats, game and mature cheeses.
