The 2022 Magma Rosso (Barbabecchi) has a complex bouquet of crushed plums, ash, lavender pastille, hints of dark chocolate and spiced citrus rinds. It opens with a balanced inner sweetness and velvety textures that are nearly fleshy in feel. Zesty acidity lights up its polished wild berry fruits. The 2022 leaves a primary concentration, edgy tannins and an air of violet pastille. (EG)

Frank Cornelissen's ultimate expression of Nerello Mascalese is from ungrafted centenarian vines in Contrada Barbabecchi at 870 to 910 metres above sea level, facing north-northeast. This 2022 tank sample has a lovely aromatic profile of earthy dark berries, while in the mouth it's tight, grippy and intense. You can tell it's not yielding all it has to give, but its pomegranate, wild strawberry, raspberry and cherry delicacy with earthy depth and long finish suggests plenty of potential left to discover with time. From ungrafted vineyards in Barbabecchi, the Frank Cornelissen 2022 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese Magma occupies a compelling space between the natural and conventional wine worlds. Fermented and matured in fiberglass vats, the wine remains in fiberglass for 18 months, followed by 24 months in bottle. Dark fruit takes on tones of mulberry and damson plum, with volcanic basalt adding complexity and a strong sense of place. At 15% alcohol, the wine shows ample fruit weight and muscle mass, yet it maintains a distinctive, baritone personality. Very nice and unmistakably special, Magma is an influential wine that continues to cause earthquakes on the volcano today. Production is 3,500 bottles, with extra magnums. (ML)

This is the apex of the estate. Magma is only produced in exceptional vintages, sourced exclusively from ungrafted, pre-phylloxera Nerello Mascalese vines in the legendary Barbabecchi contrada. It is a wine of monumental concentration and profound spiritual depth. Expect a kaleidoscope of dark cherry, dried herbs, iron, and visceral volcanic smoke. It is seamless, infinite on the finish, and stands comfortably among the greatest wines produced in Italy today.

Notes

The Frank Cornelissen "Magma" Etna Rosso is the flagship wine from Cornelissen, made exclusively from Nerello Mascalese, a native grape of Mount Etna. This iconic wine is sourced from old vines grown on the volcanic soils of the northern slopes of Mount Etna, giving it a unique expression of terroir. Known for its intensity and complexity, Magma exhibits powerful aromas of red fruits, spices, and distinctive mineral and earthy notes that reflect the volcanic landscape. The palate is structured and elegant, with fine tannins and a long, layered finish. Cornelissen’s commitment to natural winemaking eschewing additives, sulfur, and heavy intervention ensures that Magma is an authentic and pure expression of Nerello Mascalese and the extraordinary volcanic terroir of Etna. This wine is considered one of the most sought-after natural wines in the world.
