Reviewed December 2019I loved the 2017 Saint Joseph Le Clos, which comes from a singular, warmer terroir located just south of Mauve. It has a riper, more sunny, seamless style (I probably wouldn’t guess Saint Joseph in a blind tasting) as well as complex notes of kirsch, flowery incense, baking spices, and graphite. Incredibly refined, elegant, and silky, it still has ample mid-palate depth and concentration. Drink it any time over the coming decade or more as well.

Opaque violet. Intense aromas of mineral-accented cassis, blackberry, olive and licorice are complemented by a suave floral topnote and a hint of smoky bacon. Chewy and subtly sweet, offering deeply concentrated dark berry preserve, licorice, candied violet, bitter chocolate flavors and a spicy jolt of black pepper. Finishes very long and spicy, with chewy tannins and lingering dark berry character. (JR)

The third release (debut in 2015), this is a very polished and super intense, licorice and dark-plum style from a small Clos that is restored. Very supple palate with depth and polish. Drives deep and long. Chocolate and silky, deep and vibrant tannins. Drink or hold.
