My highest scoring Barolo of the vintage (out of over 300 reviewed so far), this gorgeous wine has heady aromas of violet, rose, baking spice and ripe, red berry. On the smooth, juicy palate, taut, polished tannins support succulent red cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and wild herb. It’s already delicious and accessible but will also age well for years to come.

Vinous

The 2015 Barolo is outrageously beautiful. Best of all, it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Rich, sumptuous and super-expressive, the 2015 is such a showy and expressive wine. Bright red cherry, red plum, blood orange, mint, star anise and dried flowers are all given an extra kick of textural richness in this flashy, exceptionally ripe Barolo. I loved it. (AG)

The wine is put together with amazing precision to offer beautiful fullness, freshness and balance from this textbook growing season. (ML)

The 2015 vintage was certainly rich in fruit, and despite the majority of the best producers avoiding overripeness or cooked flavours, some wines from Barolo or La Morra are more ready-to-drink than usual. Even Bartolo Mascarello with its classic style shows a ruby colour with polished strawberry fruit and milk chocolate flavours. The tannins are firm yet perfectly ripe, with a velvety texture and a long, savoury finish. (AF)

Notes

The 2015 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo is a stunning, "outrageously beautiful" expression from a warm and successful vintage. The nose is flamboyant and expressive, featuring bright red cherry, blood orange, and crushed rose petals underscored by notes of star anise, mint, and licorice. On the palate, it is flashy and sumptuous, balancing a rich textural intensity with taut, polished tannins and vibrant freshness. The finish is long and harmonious, with lingering savory notes of wild herbs and raspberry compote. While approachable now due to the vintage's ripeness, it possesses the structural pedigree to age for decades.
