The 2022 La Tâche was very impressive out of barrel; still, at the time I preferred the Romanée-Conti. I am less certain of this judgement when tasting the wines in bottle. Admittedly it is splitting hairs, but to judge what they show today, the exquisite La Tâche may have edged ahead of even the Romanée-Conti at present. It is a serious wine, substantial and structured; less open than the Richebourg and showing more savoury and spice notes than overt primary fruit, yet it is a wine that is unbelievably dense with flavour and long on the finish. 26,724 bottles produced in 2022.(CC)

Here the highly expressive nose could be accurately described as fireworks in a glass with its wonderfully floral nose and while I'm not sure quite how it's possible, the equally dazzling aromas are even spicier than those of the Richebourg. The opulently rich and voluminous broad-shouldered flavors are blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the even firmer yet finer tannins supporting the massively long and overtly mineral-driven finale that is slightly less austere than it typically is. This is quite simply brilliant.

An electric magenta colour. The bouquet can only be La Tâche with the freshly dried rose petals and the tell-tale stems completely surrounded by the perfume of the fruit. This meant several minutes of smelling before I felt ready to allow my glass of La Tâche to approach the mouth. So many wavelets of fruit that the preceding wines seem simple (which of course they aren’t) in comparison. As fine a young La Tâche as I have tasted. Effortless, endless.

The 2022 La Tâche Grand Cru was picked 4 to 6 September at 37.6 hL/ha. It is a vintage that demands time in the glass. Occasionally, La Tâche gives immediate pleasure, but the 2022 is more contained and reserved—it hides its secrets well. Eventually, the 2022 offers a mélange of red and black fruit, Earl Grey and undergrowth. Interestingly, there remains a patina of whole-cluster herbal notes that will be subsumed with time, though obviously that indicates this is not a La Tâche primed for early drinking. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins and a killer spine of acidity that lends a frisson of tension from start to finish. here is a linearity about this La Tâche allied with sapidity, extremely complex with ineffable precision. This is a brilliant La Tâche that flirts with perfection. (NM)

Notes

97 points, Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "The 2022 La Tâche Grand Cru is quite promising in its aromatics but less welcoming on the palate, where it feels a touch strict today. White pepper, sage, mint, blood orange and star anise are nicely lifted. For now, the 2022 La Tâche is somewhat of an enigma. Perhaps I caught it at a slightly awkward moment in time. Or perhaps, some of the other wines in the range just shine brighter in 2022. We shall see." (3/2025) Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "More open, airy and complex – very rewarding. Ooh, character, silken, direct – like a larger GE – growing larger and larger in the middle and finish. Wow wine! It’s a wine like this that reminds me that I should one weekend put the Beaujolais aside and open one up at home!!" (2/2025)
