The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is a classy, elegant wine that captures all the pedigree of this great site. Silky, aromatic and light on its feet, the 2021 is sublime. Orange peel, mint and kirsch all take shape in a classy, translucent Barolo that delivers the goods. This is such a gorgeous and complete wine. Sadly, production was just 1,700 bottles. (AG)

The 2021 Monvigliero from Oddero shows class and elegance as well as great aging potential. It opens with mesmerizing aromas of blue flower, wild rose, forest berry, camphor and spice while the full-bodied, youthfully austere palate delivers red cherry, spiced orange zest, licorice and crushed mint. Taut, refined tannins and fresh acidity keep it balanced. Give this time to fully come around. (KO)

With fruit sourced from a tiny 0.68-hectare parcel in Verduno, the Oddero 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is perfumed and graceful with lilac, iris root, cherry blossom and something sweet that reminds me of freshly squeezed blood oranges. That citrusy note develops as the wine opens in the glass. This is a beauty and shows Oddero's deft hand at making wines across many of Barolo's best sites. It matures in botte grande for 24 months, rendering hints of spice and earth. Production is 1,700 bottles. (ML)

A broad, fleshy red, evoking strawberry, cherry, rose, hay, mineral and menthol flavors. Balanced and supple in texture, with a firm, chalky finish. The persistent aftertaste dwells on the red fruit notes. Shows terrific integration and potential to age. (BS)

Monvigliero is often called the "Grand Cru" of Verduno, and for me, it is the spiritual home of the style of Barolo I love most: lighter in color, but incredibly intense in aromatic complexity. Oddero interprets this cru perfectly. They don't force extraction here; they let the limestone-rich white soils do the talking. The nose is intoxicating—a blast of white pepper, crushed strawberries, anise, and that signature savory "olive tapenade" note that defines Verduno. . It dances across the tongue with a nervous energy that is unmatched in the region. .

Notes

From one of Barolo’s most historic and respected traditionalist estates, the 2021 Oddero “Monvigliero” is a benchmark expression of Verduno’s most celebrated cru. From the classic and structured 2021 vintage, this wine is incredibly perfumed, showcasing the vineyard’s signature aromatic complexity and finesse. The nose is vibrant and lifted, with notes of wild strawberry, sour cherry, and rose petal, accented by Monvigliero’s tell-tale hints of white pepper, mint, and crushed herbs. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and ethereal, with a core of pure, crystalline red fruit framed by incredibly fine, silky tannins and a bright, energetic acidity. The finish is exceptionally long, savory, and intensely mineral. A stunning, terroir-driven Barolo with profound elegance and decades of aging potential.
