Reviewed July 2026A composition of the best barrels and lots of the year, the 2023 Zinfandel California is sourced from the Old Hill Ranch, Monte Rosso, Bedrock, and Belany vineyards in the Russian River Valley, with just a touch from Beeson. The idea is to offer a complete picture of Zinfandel here in this vintage. In the glass, it reveals layers of red raspberries, a hint of sweet cedar, forest earth, sweet herbs, and a floral perfume of fresh lavender. Full-bodied, it boasts ripe, well-defined tannins and a long-lasting finish. (AF)

The Old Vine Zinfandel is simply a deal: a vivid expression of old vines, selling for around $30, from several iconic vineyards in Sonoma County, with additional fruit from Contra Costa, Lodi, and Amador counties. Though it’s labelled as Zinfandel, the nature of these old-vine vineyards - historically planted to a mix of varieties - means there’s always a small percentage (around 5–7%) of 'everything else'. 'It has more genetics than any other wine bottle,' says winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson. The nose shows bright red fruit with a touch of spice, while the palate is lively and balanced, with fine-grained tannins giving way to a fresh, lifted finish.
