Reviewed September 2024
This entry-level blaufrankisch has a stunning depth of black-cherry fruit plus a breathtaking vitality on the medium-bodied palate. Fantastic precision in the long, fresh and mineral finish. From young vines (up to 25 years) in St. Margarethen plus amounts from Donnerskirchen and Mullendorf. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (SP)

The 2022 Blaufränkisch is made from the younger vines of an average age of 25 years, picked in Sankt Margarethen, Müllendorf and Zagersdorf. Blueberry and pepper are foremost on the juicy nose, with lovely energy and verve. The palate echoes this even more, with its vivid and vibrant energy on a beautifully fine-boned palate full of fruit with no heaviness at all. It is so pure, with an astonishing freshness for a year as dry as 2022. (AK)

Notes

Rosi Schuster’s 2022 Blaufränkisch is drawn from younger vines in the estate’s Burgenland holdings, including parcels in Sankt Margarethen and Müllendorf. The winery was established by Rosi and Franz Schuster in the late 1970s. Their son Hannes took over in 2007, retaining his mother’s name and concentrating on Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent. The estate has been certified organic since the 2011 vintage; grapes are harvested by hand.
