This is no ordinary Barbera. Through a long-standing friendship, I was able to secure a small bottling from one of the most iconic and celebrated estates in all of Piedmont. They treat their Barbera with the same respect as their legendary Barolos, and it shows. This is a deep, serious, and complex Barbera "Superiore" with notes of dark plum, blackberry, graphite, and sweet spice. The texture is velvety, the acidity is perfectly integrated, and the finish is long and persistent. This is a rare chance to taste the pedigree of a world-class estate at an everyday price.

When I checked the price on this wine, I had to do a double-take to see if I was tasting the correct one. Our 2022 Discovery Series Barbera d'Alba is a case-buy prospect for everyday sipping—come as you are, pizza, pasta, or light snacks with friends. Rich dark plum is elevated by bright juicy blackberry, ripe Super Sweet 100 Cherry Tomatoes, tiny hits of spice and licorice, and an alluring wave of elderflower in the finish. Sparks of minerality on the tongue add a layer of complexity to this surprising sensory experience. I still can't get over its modest price.

This Barbera overdelivers for its price with its purity of fruit and structure, brightness of acidity and Marasca cherry juiciness. It shines on its own but would be great with pizza, burgers and any pasta with red sauce. You can simply have with prosciutto and cheese and will make excellent pairing.

On the nose, there are Morello cherries and Pluots, a dusty earthiness, and a very, very subtle spice. The palate’s fruit tones are darker than the nose with plums, sweet cherries, and a mix of dark berries. That fruit is complemented by an intriguing blend of black tea spice and just a hint of earth. It is round on the mid palate with just enough tannins to give it structure. The variety’s high acidity is somewhat tempered, pulling the fruit together to a clean and refreshing finish. Delicious.
Notes
While Nebbiolo may be the king of Piedmont, Barbera is its heart. It's the region's most beloved grape, cherished for its vibrant fruit and food-friendly nature. For our Discovery Series, we didn't want just any Barbera. We sought out a "Superiore" from a special site—Panarole—known for giving this grape an extra dimension of structure and complexity. This is Barbera at its most serious and compelling.
