This drop-dead gorgeous red dazzles with an enticing fragrance of perfumed berry, fragrant blue flower, dark spice and camphor. Elegantly structured and focused, the taut, savory palate boasts remarkable finesse, vibrancy and a great depth of flavors including juicy red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and baking spice. It has incredible energy and balance thanks to taut, refined tannins and bright acidity.

Pira is a selection from relatively young vines - in the context of Roagna - of 45 years, 'with a splash of older vines,' according to Luca Roagna. The wine shines for its bright ruby-garnet colour, with aromas of blood orange, tar and macerated flowers. The sleek palate expresses wild strawberry fruit and a cherry kernel finish with firm, angular, grainy tannins. This tight, fresh, still-youthful wine is bracing and classic. (AF)

The 2016 Barolo Pira is a gorgeous, complex wine endowed with terrific depth and tons of nuance that continues to open over time. Light on its feet and yet wonderfully deep, the 2016 has so much going on. Kirsch, sweet red cherry, spice, orange zest, menthol and spice fill out the layers effortlessly. Young Barolo tannins are present, but there is plenty of richness in the fruit to keep things in balance. The Pira is absolutely stellar in this tasting. (AG)

Fresh and beguiling, delivering cherry, currant, floral, mineral, tobacco and wild herb aromas and flavors, this red is lacy and firm, as much from the vibrant acidity as the refined, chalky tannins. Ends with a fine, complex aftertaste. (BS)
