Lots of bark, forest flowers, black cherries, blackberries and baking spices in the nose. Full-bodied with layers of gorgeous tannins that coat the mouth and give an enticing silky texture that is irresistible. Juicy finish. From organically grown grapes. So beautifully already, but even better in two or three years and beyond.

The compelling San Polino Helichrysum 2019 shows even more depth than the straight Brunello and more complex aromas including new leather, blue flower, cured meat, cedar, wild heb, exotic brown spice and hazelnut. Made from the estate's highest vineyards, it's focused and full-bodied, featuring dried cherry, blood orange, licorice and saline mineral notes. Firm, tightly-woven tannins provide the backbone while bright acidity provides anery and balance.

With unimpeded views towards Monte Amiata in Montalcino's southeast, the Helichrysum vineyards are characterised by arid, stony soil, winds from the Sahara, and significant temperature differences between day and night. While the 2019 possesses the vintage's - and this site's - signature fragrance, it disperses it with measured precision. The subtle progression leads from camomile, liquorice and fennel to cocoa and tobacco. The palate is taut, compact and concentrated yet never heavy. A dark red cherry backdrop is laced with exotic spice, while tactile tannins encircle the core with a terracotta-like cling. Tuck this away for a few years. (MM)

A cooling, mentholated freshness introduces the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Helichrysum as black cherry, clove and dusty rose aromas evolve in the glass. This is a model of both purity and elegance, with textures of pure silk and depths of ripe wild berry fruits that are carried by a wave of vibrant acidity. The 2019 finishes incredibly long, structured and classically dry, yet still fresh, leaving a saturation of red plum and licorice under an inner floral air. The depth and concentration here are off the charts, as the Helichrysum holds its power in reserve. Be patient with this one. In a word, fantastic. (EG) 94+

We poured this at the Tuscany Masterpieces tasting this last weekend, and it was incredibly well received by the people in the tasting. After fermenting dry, the wine sits on the skins for another 30 days, really bringing out a lot of color and tannin, and then after going in barrel there's six months of bâtonnage that helps soften the tannins and preserve the freshness of the fruit. The result is a really approachable 2019 Brunello di Montalcino, just straight up, no gimmicks. Does it still benefit from a really healthy double decant? Sure, but what Italian wine doesn't want a couple hours of air before you really can get the most out if it? This has just a really gorgeous nose that's got a little bit of a creamy quality to it, just gobs of fruit, and then a little bit of barrel spice on the finish. The palate is very similar, the fruit is darker than the nose and really beautifully rich, this definitely has the legs to go another 10-20 years if that's what you want out of it, but it also is really delicious right now. Dark and lush, there's a grip of tannin yes, but the acidity wins out in the end my mouth is definitely not drying out as I continue to sip this. I just really enjoy this, it's just got everything I want from a Brunello in a surprisingly acessible package. Top recommendation.

Notes

San Polino "Helichrysum" Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a beautifully crafted biodynamic wine that embodies the essence of Montalcino's unique terroir. Named after the aromatic Helichrysum flowers that grow around the vineyard, this single-vineyard Brunello comes from carefully cultivated Sangiovese grapes grown on the steep hills of Montalcino. The 2019 vintage benefitted from ideal weather, resulting in impeccable ripening and vibrant acidity. In the glass, "Helichrysum" 2019 reveals an enticing bouquet of ripe black cherries, dark plums, and floral notes of violet, with hints of Mediterranean herbs, sweet spices, and a subtle touch of balsamic. On the palate, it is full-bodied with refined tannins and bright acidity that lend freshness and balance to the concentrated fruit flavors. The wine finishes long, with layers of red fruit, savory herbs, and a mineral-driven elegance. The 2019 vintage has garnered high praise, including 97 points from James Suckling, who commended its richness, depth, and impressive structure. San Polino's "Helichrysum" is a true expression of dedication to craftsmanship, offering a Brunello that is both approachable now with some decanting, but with the potential for graceful aging over the next two decades or more.
