Very fresh with notes of sliced pears, lemons and white peaches plus a touch of white pepper spice and chamomile. It’s medium- to full-bodied with bright acidity and a phenolic touch. Dry. Blend of 33% gewurztraminer, 30% sylvaner, 17% pinot blanc, 7% riesling, 7% pinot gris and 6% muscat. Drink now.

The 2022 Gentil Hugel blends 35% Gewürztraminer with all the other famous white wine varieties of Alsace, including Sylvaner, which gives this wine a beautifully aromatic and spicy as well as fresh and even slightly mineral bouquet. Round and fruity but also fresh and grippy on the palate, this is a highly stimulating and well-structured, dry yet fruity Alsace classic for countless occasions. 13.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024. As always, the Hugel tasting with Jean Frédéric Hugel includes a range of vintages, with the 2022 being the youngest and the 2014, 2016 and sweet 2015 the oldest. The 2014 Schoelhammer from Schoenenbourg, which is not marketed as grand cru, is an outstanding Riesling from the vintage and even surpasses the estate's own still-very-superb grand cru Schoenenbourg, of which the 2014 and 2016 vintages are available for purchase. The 2016 Sporen is once again a great Gewürztraminer, and the generic Vendange Tardive also shows once more that Hugel is one of the best producers of this variety in Alsace. The same applies to the 2016 Pinot Gris, particularly from the Clos du Pflostig and the grand cru Sporen. Hugel is also contributing to the rapid upswing of the Alsace Pinot Noir, because the 2016 Clos du Pflostig is remarkably fine and elegant but also intense and has an irresistible umami flavor.(SR)

The 2022 Gentil Hugel is a blend of 33% Gewurztraminer, 30% Sylvaner, 17% Pinot Blanc, 7% Riesling, 7% Pinot Gris and 6% Muscat. It opens with a gently floral note and a pale plum juiciness. The palate is light but fruit-driven, with admirable freshness – there is acidification, Hugel says – which makes the residual sweetness of just 3.7 g/L a flavor enhancer rather than a sweetener. A touch of heat is countered elegantly by a mouthwatering phenolic finish. (Dry)(AK)
