James Suckling

Reviewed September 2024
Lose yourself in this cloud of wildflower, stone-fruit and wet stone-aromas. This incredibly graceful dry riesling has both concentration and brilliance. A youthfully effusive but mind-blowing expression of the great Heiligenstein vineyard, refined from the word go. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2023 Riesling Heiligenstein-Rotenfels is a mid-slope parcel on the east-facing flank of the Heiligenstein. In 2023, this was slightly strafed by hail, but the loss was minimal. The wine was whole-bunch-pressed, fermented in stainless steel and matured in large acacia. Stone, reduction, petrichor and conifer are like catnip on the nose. Later, more air brings tangerine and steps up the seductiveness. This vibrates on the nose alone. Slender, stony, precise, pirouetting on tip-toe, this is how this wine presents itself. Time and again, it is arresting how Riesling can wrench so much flavor from stone. Exquisite, statuesque, pure and graceful, this wine is a picture of citric purity and poise, long and linear. (Bone-dry)(AK)

Notes

97 points Peter Moser for Fallstaff: "Pale yellow, green hints, silver reflections. An inviting bouquet, with subtle hints of blossom honey and mandarin zest, peach and a delicate herbal savouriness. Taut and tightly woven on the palate, notes of whites peach, lively acidity, a saline touch and a delicate, persistent finish. Will benefit from further bottle ageing." (10/2024)
