The 2023 Antidoto is made entirely from Tempranillo, vines grown over 332 plots at high altitude in different villages across Soria, 30 to 80 years old. After a short maceration of five days, fermentation takes place in stainless steel before the wine is aged five months in 600-liter French oak barrels, 25% new. The wine begs for tapas, so lovely is its supple texture and crisp red and black cherry fruit. Made in a modern style, it’s not about power as much as place, showcasing the ability to make great wine from great vineyards and grapes. It retains remarkable freshness throughout a medium-bodied core of finesse. Drink now and for the next 10 years. (VB)

The 2023 Antídoto is made with fruit from old vines in Soria, Ribera del Duero. Grapes are selected by vine age and fermented in steel with a small amount of residual sugar (1020 density), then the wine was aged in a mix of new and used 600-liter French oak barrels. Aromas of black cherry, plum and a soft floral note emerge over gentle oak. The palate is polished, with fine-grained tannins and juicy flow. This is a modern Ribera style, pulsing with the elegance of Soria. (JH)

Made with Tinto Fino grapes from 700 parcels in Soria, this is a very good introduction to the joys of this easternmost province of Ribera del Duero. Adroitly matured in 25% new oak, it has plenty of perfume, a hint of stony reduction, bramble, vanilla and blackberry fruit and graceful, layered tannins.

Lots of fruit here, showing fleshy dark cherries, violets and a touch of spices. Rich with full body and pulpy fruit. A nice coating of lightly chewy tannins is followed by a medium-length finish. 100% tempranillo. (ZS)

In recent years, Ribero del Duero has gained a reputation for big and brooding wines, but the 2023 Antidoto presents a compelling alternative viewpoint. Focused instead on complexity derived from old vine material and unique terroir, rather than high octane alcohol and jammy fruit, the Antidoto is an elegant and expressive style of Ribero del Duero. The winery’s flagship wine, it is 100% Tempranillo sourced exclusively from higher-altitude old-vine vineyards in the Soria province on the eastern edge of the appellation. The wine is fermented in steel and aged for five months in 600L barrels, only 25% of which are new. Designed to be fresh and bright — and immediately drinkable — there is also a quiet power on the palate. While it's certainly not a massive, meaty wine, it is certainly not shy or lacking in concentration and depth, either. Dense bramble fruit notes on the nose are balanced extremely well by a fine, well-integrated structure on the palate and the faintest hint of vanilla and baking spice from the French oak, as well as pretty iris and violet. There is a distinct sense of finesse and class here, and the wine is very approachable now, even on its own without food. A fantastic weeknight wine, this is an exciting new perspective on Tempranillo and Ribero del Duero.

There's something very savory buried in the nose, it kind of smells a bit like a promise of something to come later, but we'll find out together. I don't really call this note much, but there's something very blue about the fruit on the nose, like the skin and a bit of the flesh of a really ripe blueberry, underneath that some black fruit, and then a touch of tarry leather and herbs. The palate definitely has a lot of savory elements, but there's still some pretty blue and black fruits there, with a little bit of some red cherry and bitter green herbs towards the finish before more tarry notes come in and just a little hint of barrel spice along with some barrel roundness. The tannins are firm, but not super grippy and instead are rather fine and well integrated, but the overall mouthfeel is really lush and luxurious. I want to have this with something grilled, I feel like that little kiss of the flame would pair perfectly with this wine. Yum yum.

Notes

Bodegas Antídoto is a relatively new wine project in Ribera del Duero, exploring the remote, cooler eastern area of the region. Winemaker Bertrand Sourdais is a Frenchman by birth, and his family owns an estate in Chinon, in the Loire Valley. He formerly worked at Dominio de Atauta in Ribero del Duero, where he met local David Hernando. Working alongside each other, the pair found a common passion for the old vines of the region. In 2011, they decided to form their own winemaking partnership with Bodegas Antídoto. The focus is on vineyards that are over 50 years old, with a sizeable percentage that are ungrafted. Just as important, the growers Antiodoto work with were chosen for their willingness to adopt strict viticultural standards, eschewing chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, and even adopting elements of biodynamics. Antídoto is of course Spanish for “antidote.” The wine presents an alternative to the many Ribera de Duero wines that substitute heavy-handed winemaking for a sense of place and variety. And at a relatively modest price point, it is surely an antidote to high wine prices in the appellation.
