James Suckling

Reviewed July 2024
Welcome to the Bladerunner of Nahe riesling Spatlese. This is also extremely fine and complex, with a cornucopia of stone fruit, exotic fruit and spices. Radical stony minerality and racy acidity, yet with a feather-light mouthfeel on the barely medium-bodied palate. Then you wonder if the wine will ever leave you, so long is the almost endless farewell. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese, grown on shale, has equal notions of moss and lemon. More air makes this smell simply of wet stone. The palate carries gentle sweetness but is absolutely precise and slender. Citrus frames everything with the clearest precision. Everything is serene, zesty, tender, yet so very serious. The 2023 is glorious in its lightness and disarming in its elegance. (Sweet)(AK)

The 2023 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese is deep, pure, intense and still nutty on the mineral rather than fruity nose. Dense, sweet and savory on the palate, this is a tight and concentrated yet also pretty sweet Spätlese with saline and crystalline acidity and fine grip on the finish. 8.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in October 2024.(SR)

Notes

95+pts Fallstaff Magazine: "Still almost closed on the nose. Smoky terroir tones dominate. In the mouth, the wine begins fresh and carbonated, then a powerful dose of palate-rubbing monoterpenes unfolds. There is a lot of underlying extract that, along with acidity, dominate the sweetness (which in turn provides volume and length). An ideal type!-Ulrich Sautter"(11/2024)
